I am just getting in to shotguns (come on Grizzly), but was wondering how the modern pump guns (870, 500 etc.), not recoil/gas semis handled different length shells loaded at the same time.

e.g. for bear defense, if you chambered a 3" #4 buck as a first shot, and then 2 3/4" 00/000 buck or slugs to follow, would the pump cycle/eject/chamber reliably?

Or if you went further with it and loaded 2 3/4" and 3" every second round?

Not saying I would do this, or asking about the defensive strategy... just wondering on the action/cycling.

I wouldn't mix ammo in a pistol mag (different weights or types etc.), just curious on the shotgun thing.

Remember if the bear is coming at you, doesn't matter 2 3/4" or 3" just keep pulling the trigger!!!:50cal: :runaway:

Yup. A round of 2 3/4" #4 buck will work better than a "OhcrapIneedtochamberaslugjustasecondtheremistergrizzlywhileIgetthis3inchbrennekechamberedmywhatbigteethyouhaveIreallyhopethisisabluffcharge" round.

Legal Note: The author of this post is not making any sort of commentary on the relative effectiveness of #4 buckshot versus a brenneke slug. He doesn't want to start an ursine management tactics threadjack.

I start with 3" #4, not 2 3/4 (41 pellets vs. 27). ;)
