220 grain 8x57 and 3031

I have a Husqvarna 1640, chambered in 8x57JS. I shoot practically exclusively 196/200 grain bullets.

Loads that have given the best accuracy and velocity are built with Vihtavuori N150/N550 or Hybrid
100V. These are all in the 4350 burn rate area. I am getting 2500/2550 fps without pushing the
envelope in the longer barrel.

Your rifle is fairly light, so recoil will be noticeable if you load to it's potential. Good luck! Dave.

Honestly with stock geometry and recoil pad etc I find this rifle with full house 196 grain loads is a lot more comfortable to shoot than a kimber hunter or model 7 308 with maxed out 308 180s.

Do you have a wierd body shape??? No diss.

Are you exceptionally tall, have long arms, long neck??? People finding the recoil on Mod 7s in the chambering you describe, often have felt recoil issues.

Does your rifle have a long butt???? Does it have a large, shotgun style butt face?

Fit of a rifle is extremely important when it comes to felt recoil.

I have a Ruger #1 chambered for the 338-06 and recoil is moderate with 225 grain bullets. It's about 3-4 pounds heavier than your rifle.

I have a Martini chambered for the 7x65R, that is easily the equivalent of a 280Rem. It definitely lets me know it's being fired, even with light bullets and a stock that fit me perfectly.

If you have a rifle of the weight you suggest and I believe you do, felt recoil of any 200+ grain bullet in the 2400-2600fps range is going to be substantial.

Have you fired this rifle from the bench????

Yes I have fired it from the bench lmao, I have fired an entire ladder of 200 grain loads

No I am not especially weirdly shaped. But I have very broad shoulders, not much in the neck department. Above average height but not considerably so. A “ big guy” but not overweight. You know, the kind of shape that doesn’t complain about the recoil of an 8x57

You seem pretty concerned about the recoil of this gun, don’t worry, you will never have to shoot it.

With that detailed description of yourself, you risk someone asking you for pics! LOL Sorry, had to say it....

Experience of recoil is a bit subjective, perhaps - can read old Africa hands firing black powder 4 gauge muzzle loader rifles - that is 4 ounce / 1,750 grain round balls - it would knock them to ground, knock them off a horse - sometimes. Or boomers, like 416's, or perhaps some 458's or .577's. Can read how trigger guards would break fingers on shooting hand on recoil. Hard to suggest that any "normal" deer rifle can have a "lot" of recoil, although I did have a fairly husky work partner in the mine who "bragged" how his GrandPa's steel butt plate 30/30 would kick the snot out of him when he fired it.

I came in a little hot with my response, recoil is subjective indeed. These rifles are available in 9.3x74r and I have seen videos online of guys shooting and hunting with those bare ~6lbs. Ouch

Also I only ever shot the kimber and mod 7 with fx ultra lite 2.5x scopes or a shield RDS that weighs ~ 1oz. Both around 3/4-1/2 pound less than this gun.

Andy I am sorry but I am under contractual obligation with “ CGN gone wild” to not share any pictures while my edition of the calendar is in circulation. If the person requesting has a single daughter between 27-35 we can talk.

Dave N150 was suggested to me last powder shortage as a sub for varget I believe? Do you use it in med bore magnums as well?

3031 would make excellent ammo for shooting an plinking. It is too fast a powder for the higher velocity available for that bullet. For hunting I would use a slower powder. Say, around the 4350 speed.

If I was to sit down to make some ammo with 3031 and those heavy bullets, I would start with 39 gr and go from there.

My 220gr Load for my zastava m70 with 22inch barrel is 48GR of imr 4064 @ 2450 fps and MOA accuracy.

196-200gr loads consist of IMR 3031 46.5gr @ 2550 fps with sub moa accuracy as I mentioned before.

here are some other loads that can be something to play with in the future
