I am looking at buying a new pistol and wanted to know once and for all from Taurus owners only, if they would suggest buying one or not. I know many people hate them and say they have no customer service, but I would not comment on a firearm I have never owned personally. I noticed their guns come with lifetime repair policy so please chime in. I am thinking about a shiny .40 , .45ACP, or 9mm Just for all the people who will say get a _______ it is so much better, I have 17 handguns from all manufacturers just wanted something else.:cool:

I have owned several Taurus firearms in my life time. I was born and raised in Brazil and until I moved to Canada all I ever shot were Taurus (mainly due to lack of any other options at that time).

While in Canada, I owned a PT92AR SS and 2 PT24/7 DAO in 9mm. In my opinion, they are very good quality pistols and I would own them forever if R Nichols really stepped up to the plate and started treating them with respect. You will find that, despite the fact that Taurus offers life time warranty, it's going to be very difficult to get parts and or service in Canada, especially through R Nichols.

In short, they are mechanical devices and can/will break like any other firearm. It will be at no value to you to purchase a Taurus (and save some money) if you cannot get it serviced properly.

Only my 2 cents.

I own a Taurus revolver and being a semi auto guy I really like it...naver had any problems... Also plan to get a PT1911 in SS when they'll come out (because it's a 1911 CS isn't really an issue because any 1911 part will fit ;))

fyi FN sports/R Nichols is also a destributor for HK, SIG, Springfield, Ruger and Colt so if you have any of the guns mentioned I don't see why you shouldn't get a Taurus...

I never had to dela with FN sports myself, but from what I understand it's not that they can't get parts it's just that it takes a while...
 
I've owned a PT99 for going on 15 years (I think) and it's never hiccuped on me.
I wouldn't hesitate to buy another one.
 
As scary as not having anyone to turn to if the gun breaks taurus is a really good firearm i have a raging bull in 44. mag and its perfect and on the price side reasonable so if it does break in a year or two it won't hurt as much... jand alot could happen in a few years who knows taurus might finally open a customer service centre up here
 
Taurus makes knock-offs of reasonable quality, but not of the same quality in terms of materials and fit and finish etc. and the originals (for example S&W revolvers and their Taurus clones). I've worked with them, taken them apart etc. They look the same, but they are not.

The key factor here is price. If Taurus prices were low enought compared to the originals then the sacrifice in quality would be worth it to some people, who prioritized price over quality.

The problem is, however, if you check the pricing, Taurus is usually not very much cheaper to to buy.

The result: Buy the real McCoy - for example, buy the Baretta or S$W original because the Taurus knock-off will not be much cheaper at all.

This is also a huge factor regarding resale value. I just sold an original S&W revolver for a lot more than what I paid for it (used) only eight years ago. Had it been a Taurus, forget about it. And this was a gun I never thought I'd sell - but you never know what the future holds.

Think about it.

Taurus doesn't make 'knock-offs" many of their new guns are very original and innovative enough to influence other gun makers. For example I bet if Taurus didn't make the Taging Bull .454 in '99 and marketed it as the most powerful DA revolver. S&W wouldn't have made their .500/X frame (which surprisingly looks a lot like the Raging Bull (talk about knock offs :D)) since L frame isn't big/strog enough to handle anything bigger than .44mag…Not to mention their Titanim revolver line (again I think they did it before the S&W). Their 24/7 DA/SA hammerless pistols is another original idea… Sure they make Beretta 92 look alikes (but not clones!) but hey they bought the plant (back in '70s) so why wouldn't they? They're not like Norinco ripping off other designes....

As for quality of their guns it’s better than decent, maybe some older once were iffy but current guns are a great value.

Just to add my opinion - I purchsed a 24/7 9mm and thought it was a nice pistol for the price. It was my first handgun and it worked great. Everything functioned the way it should and the workmanship was very good. It handled well, but the sights were a little to be desired (straight eight). At the time of my purchase, there weren't too many aftermarket sights, but I've seen them since.

Have you seem both in person? those photos do a lousy job... but take a good look at the barrel; rounded muzzle, shape of front sight, bull barrel (longer barrel and cylinder of the S&W make it looks smaller)...

but I stand by what I said if Taurus didn't push the 'I make the biggest baddets revolver', S&W would probably just stick with making their .22's .357's .44's etc. I doubt that it's a coinsedance that .500 X-frame came out only a couple of years after the .454 R Bull....

Like others previously stated, I too have many handguns from various manufacturers in both auto and revolvers. I also have a few Taurus' (Tauri?:D) as well. I have no problem with any of the Taurus and have found them all to be great shooters and function well. I havnt had a problem with any of them from the little 2" snubbie to the hand cannon 454 Casull Raging Bull. I have had experience with Nicholls re acquiring spares and I would rather chew tin foil than talk to those yahoos again. Most of the bashers are either referring to old model which admittedly had a bad rep back in the 80's, or are passing on their opinions which were formulated by heresay and stories of a friend who has a friend etc... Indeed they do have a service representation problem here in Canada at present, but try to get good Cust svc if your SIG breaks..Thats another experience I have.
Just do your research on the gun you are thinking about. Personally, I have no problem with Taurus products or any of the manufacturers. Its their service reps where the problems occur, and other than my outstanding praise for S&W and Ruger you can find problems anywhere. It depends on the person.

The X frame looks like every other S&W underlug barrel revolver ever made, just bigger. The Taurus frame is a S&W rip off, the barrels are completly different looking.......:confused:
Ruger came out with the .480 Ruger before the S&W 500, how do you know they were just not following market trends? BTW what cartridge did Taurus ever invent? Oh yeah, none, cause they only rip off other ideas......:)

And for long did Ruger make the .480? when was it? BTW do we realy need another caliber? :rolleyes: What handgun caliber invented in the last 10 years was really nessesary? ;) Taurus just makes guns for the calibers that are already out there like .480ruger, .500, .218bee, .22hornet, .30carbine + all the common once.
