Smallest light weight NR .22lr for a pack rifle?

Pls keep us updated on your custom stock design.
I have a Rascal in stock configuration and like it, accurate little thing.

There are new models of the Rascal in an adult sized tactical type synthetic stock and they come with 16" threaded barrels with no iron/peep sights, Haven't seen one in canada but then again I didn't look too hard. My local shop had a black regular version priced a little less than Cabela's which I was quite happy to see and even more happy to shop local and keep the money in our small town.
I'll probably make a stock similar to the tactical version I see on google searches but I want the buttstock to be able to house some "survival" essentials.

I don't think those are adult sized stocks. Savage lists both the regular Rascal and Rascal Target at 30.625" OAL. The Target is also significantly heavier - 4.4lb vs 2.7lb.

You'll have to post when you've got the new stock figured out. I'm still brainstorming what to do with my Rascal, right now I've got a slip on recoil pad on it but I had to shim the slip on pad with foam due to how small the buttstock is on the Rascal and I wouldn't trust it that way in the bush, one snag and the pad will come off...

tried the bushnell engage 2-7 with the vortex rings and no bueno...... too heavy and awkward by a long shot. No longer a light packable rig with that on there. LOL
mini or micro red dot might be a plan. Gonna have to think this one thru. Mine is just for grouse and bunnies so I'm not gonna over think it but it needs to stay in that light and packable range.

I looked at the keystone crickets, the badger , the 10-22 take down and I settled on the rascal because of it's weight and I can make a nice light more adult featured stock quite easily in my shop. I think if I had and knew how to use a 3D printer, the badger would have been given more consideration just for fun factor.

Uhm. Kinda on the right track but there is a person on CGN had a laminated stock fitted just for his kids LOP.
Looked pretty good too. Red, grey and something else too in the laminations.
Rascal, Cricket or Chipmunk ??
Escapes me right now.....hate getting old!

I saw some laminated ones in the google search. I think there is a keystone cricket model that comes in laminate? not sure
I am just going to make something super light with carbon fiber over a balsa core.... basically. No commercial aspirations either, just a one off as a winter project.
Keeping it light and practical is the plan but I really want to encorporate a buttstock compartment with ease of access to spare rounds and some basic essentials typically found with a "survival" rifle.
Some if the 3d printer Badger customizations I have seen on this site are pretty awesome..... some talent amongst us in that regard for sure.

@45 acp, there is a guy on here that 3d prints stock extensions for the rascal.

The son of a friend of mine was going to make me a 3d printed extension but then he started his first real job (trucking) and lost interest in doing the printing and never got around making one unfortunately.

I need more info on this! So you know the users name? Does he sell em on the EE? I just searched for 'Rascal' and didn't see anything?

that sounds pretty cool.
I used to make stocks as a small business but closed up when trudeau got elected for his first term. I still enjoy making them though and have some materials left I need to use up so it will be a fun project.

here is a rifle I built out of a mossberg plinkster youth. it weighs just under 2 pounds loaded and holds 7 round in the mag.
what i ended up doing was,

-changed pins for roll pins
-shortened the mag to 7 rounds to make it more stream line with the rifle (lighter too)
-made four 3mm wide 1mm deep cuts into the bolt
-removed what I could from the bolt handle
-turned the barrel super thin, just in front of the receiver its 12.5mm and tapers to 11.5mm over 9" (1" tenon)
-fluted the barrel
-skeletonized the trigger guard/assembly
-removed a 8mm wide 4mm deep slot from top of receiver
-machined 1/2" holes in receiver below the stock line
-cut the hell out of the stock
-made aluminum screws to hold receiver in stock

it is 27" long with a short lop of 12.25" but its not so bad with the shape of the stock and lack of recoil (maybe its the lack of rear sight)

i still need to add a rear sight to this. but its pretty easy to aim like a shotgun though. one day.
the first pic is how it sits right now but with small slits in the mag to bring it under the 2 pounds when fully loaded.

^^^ That is some nice work!

Mine are less lightweight than they were before, but certainly more ergonomic (comfortable I would say), and have been nothing but dead-nuts reliable.. accurate... and a fun project.

What rifles are available in Canada that are none-restricted in .22lr that a guy can keep in his pack while big game hunting, in case he comes across a couple birds he wants to shoot? I am aware of the Chiappa little badger, the ruger 10/22 take down and the marlin take down that goes into the stock. But are there any others?

Thanks!

Did anyone respond with the 'pack rifle'? It's 1 lb, takes down to about 16" in two pieces, keeps some short quiets in the butt stock tube and pistol grip tube. Not cheap, not sure availability. Prophet River Firearms used to sell them, maybe they still do. Not even air pistols are this light...only thing lighter might be a sling shot.

Yes, it was mentioned earlier, very cool rifles, but last i checked they were asking $$$

This is awesome. I have a beater plinkster I might do something very similar with. Is there much flex in the stock?

This is a really nice rifle. It’s something I would probably buy if I saw it on a local gun store. I have respect for the builder. You took the time to build a beautiful rifle. Many of us have these project rifles rolling around in our heads that never get built.
But am I missing something here....
For many years I have been taking my rifles to gunsmiths to have them “modified “. I have always been warned about the legal pitfalls of cutting or modifying a rife barrel to a shorter length. I have been living under a bridge in a cardboard box for a few years..Have things changed with the legal barrel length of semi auto rifles? I have always thought a semi had to be 18 inches plus unless the barrel was manufactured by a licensed company at that length and said rifle had an overall length with stock that was over legal for Canada. I didn’t think a barrel could be shortened or manufactured on a factory made rifle below a certain length at home or at my Buddys machine shop.
I’m not trying to be a Fudd. Can someone enlighten me on this.
