Vortex Razor LHT or Leupold VX-5HD?

Hey guys

I’m putting together a rifle setup for a longer range hunting option, that’ll also let me lay down and ring a 500 yard gong on occasion. I managed to get my hands on a used HS-Precision Pro series, in .270, for a very good price. I’m down to these two options for glass: vortex razor LHT 3-15x42 or the Leupold VX-5HD 3-15x44.

They’re similar in price and I do like that I can get the Vortex in MRAD, with a hashed reticle, rather than a duplex.

I’d like to hear experience or thoughts on either. I’ve had good experiences with both brands.

You can get the leupold in MRAD with a MRAD reticle. VX-5HD 3-15X44 CDS-ZL2 SIDE FOCUS HTMR. That being said you cant get the HTMR with illumination.
I have the mentioned leupold and I do like it. the glass is great, it has been repeatable, holds zero, the elevation turret work well. But i dont like the windage turret, it feels cheap. My only other gripe is with them both...they are both SFP.
Vortex does make the Razor® HD LHT™ 4.5-22x50 FFP, but its $600 more, and 2 more oz's

I have the vortex razor LHT 3-15x42 with the hsr-5i, which is zero'd for 200 yards with a 140gr 6.5prc. The magnification ring is stiff as ####, but the glass quality/coatings/reticle make up for that. Even with a standard set of rings my bullets can easily drop around 8moa between 500-520 yards, which is a simple hold over on that reticle...no dialing required. Of course I use a laser and I know my bullet drops at various distances but that comes with shooting at longer ranges.

I have never liked and with never use a duplex reticle.

I have a LHT 3-15x42 in MRAD. I was in the same boat as you and went with the LHT as I found lots of reviews on the Leupold complaining of tracking issues. I'm very very happy with the scope and it's exactly what I wanted Vortex to do as someone who already owned their LH. I will say it isn't perfect though. As Pointdexter said the magnification ring is stiff. There is some illumination bleed but that's common with the LHT and VX5. I'd also love to see a slightly nicer feeling elevation turret but for the price it's more than good enough.

I bought a LHT in the x50 version love it and the reticle it's very user friendly and instinctual to use at least for me tracks excellent like others have said the power ring is not the best but other than that I really like it over some of the newer leupolds

I thought the VX5 glass looked better to my eyes, but concur that a duplex reticle sucks. If the reticle's a deal breaker I doubt you'd regret going Razor.

I couldn't really tell much difference in the glass between the two brands until I started viewing the mountain meadows up behind my house...at over 2000 meters the flowers on the VX5HD would blur together, while the LHT I could still distinguish the individual flowers.

Both scopes topped at 15x magnification.

This turned out long winded, apologies in advance.

I have owned 4x Leupold VX-6HD scopes over the years. All the 3-18x44 with Firedot Duplex reticles. Good scopes all in all, but I sold them all. I now have 3x Vortex Razor HD LHT 3-15x50 with the G4i reticle on various rifles, two plinkers and my main hunting rifle. So what gives?

As much as the VX-6HD scope is the pinnacle of Leupold hunting scopes, it struggles with reticle issues. 2 of the 4 scopes I had went back for warranty work, all reticle related. Did Korth do a great job? Of course they did. One of the scopes had an issue they couldn't fix, it had to go back to Leupold USA. Still, for warranty work Korth was very good to deal with.

However, the best warranty is one you'll never use doesn't apply to the VX-6HD line of scopes. I'm sure it doesn't apply to the Vortex Razors either but I have yet to have a problem.

Are the Razor HD LHT scopes perfect in comparison? Far from it. As previously mentioned, the maginification rings are ungodly to turn. MK Machining throw levers fixed the problem but still, the Leupolds were much better in that regards.

The Razor scopes have illumination, true, but it doesn't compare to the Leupold Firedot. The Leupold Firedot is truly daytime visible and is overall much brighter that the Vortex. Both scopes have mushy illumination buttons, the Vortex being the worse of the two. For illumination controls, nothing I have used has yet to beat the Nightforce NXS Compact scopes, but I digress.

Reticles are a matter of personal preference, until actual real world performance is involved. I much prefer the Vortex G4i reticle, on paper at least. For hunting, this year has been a different story. The Vortex reticle is too fine and gets lost on deer, especially in low light. The illumination is finicky to work in a hurry. I actually had two misses this year with that reticle. Of course there are certainly other factors that contributed to the misses, but I hadn't missed in the last 3 years with the Leupold Duplex...

Further on reticles, the Firedot Duplex is wider than I would like. This is made up by the Firedot reticle of course but I'm still not a fan. For a duplex reticle, I like the ones found in the Vx-3i non illuminated scopes. Much narrower and finer center duplex. The Vortex G4i reticle is better on paper, but in my case this year I couldn't activate the illumination in time when I needed it in low light situations.

So my recommendation for you? VX-5HD duplex non illuminated reticle. I would want to look through one first to make sure it doesn't have the same wide duplex than the VX-6HD. If the Duplex is narrower like in the Vx-3i that would be my choice.

As for me, I will be keeping my Razors for now, until I decide it's time to move on. The Razor on my main hunting rifle is on the chopping block though. When it goes, it will probably get replaced by a Leupold VX-5HD.

Before I buy another hunting scope, I'm going to wait and see what the new scope company from Calgary (Apex) is coming out with...supposedly in the new year.
