100 grain hp in 303, how fast?

So I orders some 100 grain HP hornady 32 cal (.312) bullets, and was wondering how fast I can push them.

I could load down to 327 federal velocity with trail boss but I found reloading info for 100 grain plinkers in 30-40 krag(my go to 303 doplganger) that starts around 2100fps.

Might be a good plinking/coyote load, might spin the bullet to fast and have it fly apart on the way to the target.

Anyone have any advice on this?

In a Lee Enfield or other "weak" action, about 3100 fps, in a strong action (e.g. P14, Ruger #1), about 300 fps more than that.

That said, those bullets would probably not behave well at those MV's.
 
This is what 7gr of Unique looks like after a 3/8" thick gong stops it. 100 yards with the sight set to 800. I cant remember if it was a No 1 or a P14.

9.0 gr of Bullseye works great in 4 of my 303's. 1" at 70 yards most times. They are too short to stay stable much past the 9.0 gr mark in my guns. No recoil, brass lasts indefinitely. Make them by the hundreds.
 
i tried same bullets with max. load , 48 grains blc2 and they blew apart before reaching 25 yards,way too fast,

As they're designed for use in pistols, I'd say 1500 fps for optimum terminal effectiveness on game, perhaps a bit higher. As for the upper limit at which they'll hold together, higher yet, but apparently not to the 3000 fps range as suggested.

Hodgdon reloading online gives this data for 125gr.

so you could probably start near max if using a 100gr bullet

H4895 2.915" 41.0GR 2,791FPS 42,400 CUP 45.0GR 2,931FPS 43,700 CUP

I feel 3000fps would be pretty easy.

EDIT, I noticed you said IRM4895, sorry the load I listed is H4895
 
Yeah, I noticed that there is not as much recipie for imr 4895 as h4895. Do you think it would be safe to use h recipies with the imr powder? Not near max pressure, but I am not sure if there is danger at the bottom end (secondary explosive effect?)
From what I have read here, it sounds like catastrophic bullet failure is only really an issue with the fast pistol powders(unique, red dot, bulls eye)
I don’t have a lot of options to buy powder, so right now I have imr 4895, and trail boss. When I can get into winipeg, I want to get h4350, which doesn’t have the highest velocities, but should be a good hunting powder, consistent at all temps.
 
Not sure what H4350 is going to do for you with light bullets in 303.... You're obviously new to the game, and trying to think outside the box. The salient issue here is the erratic performance of the rifle powder at reduced loads/pressures, and whether you can get repeatable deflagrations, not SEE and detonations.
Finally, the bullets you are looking at are pistol bullets that are designed for performance at pistol velocities. Push them too fast and they fragment on game. Push them way too fast and they fragment in air. Used properly with pistol powders these issues are unlikely to occur.

If you're going to do this, stick with powders like 4895 and faster. Slower powders even with a full case, and especially with partial fills, risk poor results. Using 4350 gains nothing with the 100 gr bullet weight. The other possible factor is that the short bullet might completely exit the neck before it engages the rifling which can result in a hangfire, particularly with slower powders.

I still have some .303's downstairs loaded with 32 S&W bullets and 4895 that my father put together about 60 years ago!
I'll jump down and get the data if I can find them! LOL

speer reloading manual no,11 page255 :100 grain plinker rn,.308, up to 51 gr. h414 ,i tried this and with this .308 bullet my results were excellent at 100 yards,
