Bought a 16.5 Inch SKS barrel off the EE now what??

Yup - as per usual I jumped into the whirlpool with both feet and no lifejacket:redface:. So I got this barrel off the EE with hopes to rebarrel an SKS and have it verified and re-registered as restricted. Apparently "paratrooper" models are quite well respected in the US and the one thing I've always disliked about the SKS is the longish barrel. This thing should be here by the end of the week soooo...

Have some questions for the guru's...

1) This looks to be a pinned barrel with half the receiver still there right?

2) Did some searching and found out it's a very hard job to remove a pinned barrel - right? Or can it be done by a good gunsmith?

3) Doesn't come with a gas tube or piston, this being a "paratrooper" model barrel, will this take a standard gas tube and piston or will I have to find a "D" version?

4) Any ideas where I would find a good beater donar gun? Lever comes to mind as I wonder if they have any of those SKS's with the pinned barrel problems sitting around in a junk pile somehwere.

5) I know this will cost me more than it's probably worth but I'm an idiot that way:D

6) Any observations and tips appreciated.....:runaway:

answers:

1. thats correct its a pinned barrel .

2. not difficult for a gunsmith to remove the pinned barrel from the receiver , why would it be the receiver is scrap ..... if anything, its more difficult to put a barrel in a good receiver.

3. according to the pic on riflechair EE, the barrel will take a standard tube, some "D" also uses the same length.

4. sorry, dont know any donor.

5. dont know the cost but its a damn good project, if you got the skill and machinery then you might as well make it a RESTRICTED SKS-D.

6. have fun but remember its only money.:D
 
You might want to confirm that you will be able to have the registration of the rifle amended to restricted, before the barrel is installed.
 
As mentioned above, make sure you'll be able to register it as a restricted. I know there are cases of guys with nonrestricted M1 carbines who have been denied reregistration with a new 18" barrel.

I'm also unsure that you'll be able to do this legally...talk to CFC before doing thing one. There's also the issue of why on earth you'd want to convert a non restricted to a restricted??? Sure, it looks cool...but that's the end of the good side.

Thanks for the info guys - I'll call the cfc tomorrow and get the scoop on registration...farking frustrating though if it is illegal to do so...I mean I want to put more restrictions on it....they should be happy about that!!!!

Anyone have any tips to give my smith if I can do something with it?
 
I think it could be done. You would have to find a "frame only" that is registered as such, then barreled, verified, and re-registered as restricted.
 
Sorry Calum - I called the CFC and I can indeed legally have a non-restricted SKS rebarreled with the 16.5 and have it re-registered restricted...now to find a donar gun;)
 
Not to be picky, but you got this CFC opinion from someone in a position to make such a definitive statement?

Hmmm....Well I was transfered to a "firearms technician" who gave me the info. One of their "information officers" didn't know the answer to the question I asked..I think to convince my smith to do the work I'll probably need something in writing anyway...I'll call back tomorrow and request it.
 
I don't think there's a problem, as long as the barrel is a factory one, I'd bet that there are at least a couple of the Navy Arms restricted SKS's out there.
 
Finally got a response from the technician - here's her e-mail:

It’s not a problem to have the barrel change for a shorter one. To add the entry in FRT and to do the certificate amendment we need to know who manufacture the barrel.



The classification of the firearm will be restricted and you won’t be able to hunt with it and you’ll need an ATT to go to the range

I checked the barrel and on it is stamped "C&A VA BCH VA" - I assume this was the manufacturer/importer as I think all of these went to the U.S. did they not?

The restricted status wouldn't bother me. I don't hunt and I always go to the range with a restricted anyway, so no biggie. From what I can find on the net the barrel would have been made by Norinco and then imported by C&A. So the manufacturer would be norinco.


Also - I wouldn't exactly call the "paratrooper" a bubba job anymore than I would call a 12.5' 870 copy a bubba job. It's just a civilian varient of a military rifle - with way cool AK mags:D!!
