I've got a nice AC 43 P38 that I haven't shot yet, but plan to do some shooting with it - springs still seem OK.

I'm curious how many fellow CGN'ers regularly shoot their P38s?

P38's

Hey,

I have owned 4 P38's and I have shot all of them. They all worked great and were fun to shoot. I found them to have a light recoil and be fairly accurate compared to some other WW2 pistols.

I have owned all the major manufacturers (2x AC, 1x byf and 1x cyq). I personally liked the byf as my favorite shooter.

Have fun, they are great pistols.

I bought a P-38 early this spring to use in World War 2 re-enacting matches. This is my second cyq, I had one back in the late '70's. With zeroing the pistol (probably the first time it was ever zeroed!), I've but at least 600 rds down range in practice. Trade Ex Canada has the best prices in Canada for spare magazines ($25.00 each) at this time.

I had one ...a p1 that was...1970 vintage, shot too powerful load and fractured the locking block...had to replace the alloyd frame...so easy on the load. At the time we were firing military 9mm ammo intended for the GP35 Browning and the SMG...too powerfull for regular guns, a friend had the frame on his Sig Sauer break apart...slide went too far back and border of the frame ripped and curled on each side.

That NATO 9mm is too hot for a lot of pistols (probably even the one's you mention). Its meant to cycle a heavy SMG bolt!

As for the top cover coming off, was your rear sight loose before you shot it? Its quite common that the top cover on these needs an adjustment by a gunsmith to tighten it all up. The loose rear sight is a common symptom of the problem.

Actually, the word "Parabellum" refers as much to the loading as to the case design. The Italian 9mm Glisenti was exactly the same dimensions as the 9P, but the P was loaded much heavier.

Canadian 9mm Para ammo might be rough on P-38s, but Lugers love the stuff.

For a P-38, stay away from German burp-gun stuff and green-stained casings: these are proof rounds.

1943 P:38

Hello

Glad I read this thread. I just bought a WW2 with nice Nazi markings on it. I was glad to read about the lighter rounds, the pistol is in great shape though. Cross my fingers :)

Does anyone have some stats on the original German ammo issued for it? Certainly the same as for the Luger. Same for the submachineguns as well?

Standard 9mm ammo is around 35,000 psi - similar to a 357 Mag

So far as i know, all 9mm (other than +p) is about the same pressure.

A handload of less than max pressure is a good idea in all handguns, so they don't get beat up.

I occasionally shoot my P-38s. Too many guns and not enough time to regularly shoot them all.
