Hello and thanks for any help you add. My phone was in the car so no pics.

As the title says there is a used firearm I was looking to purchase. A S&W m&p 9 1.0.
Around the muzzle/crown of the barrel there are a few markings. It is used has been fired before so this could be normal wear and tear.
It has been cleaned for the shop and left out for sale and the marks are still there so, I don't think they'd leave marks they could clean off easily.
Everything else seems to be in good condition or is an area that would show wear like inside the slide (the sales guy broke it down for me).
It doesn't seem to be gouges or chips just mainly discoloured compared to the rest of the muzzle.

I just read about Q-tip testing to see if it snags the cotton. http://bulletin.accurateshooter.com/2016/05/check-your-crowns-condition-with-a-q-tip/

Muzzle wear is normal. Remember you got super hot gases exiting the muzzle and it pushes out like a rocket.

Like look at a vehicle exhaust, they're always discolored at the tip/exit.

My Marlin 60 leaves a design at the muzzle,. I guess from the micro-groove rifling. Is that what you're seeing? Some ammo is more pronounced than this. Takes a bit of solvent to remove, that may have been missed by the gun shop.

Are you talking end -inside the bore ,or the outside of a semi auto?
I would suggest if you have a picture on your phone, post it .
the out side of a semi may have a few marks, but nothing that you should feel with your fingers unless it has had a pile of rounds.
on a blue barrel you will see blue wear.
Should not be any discolor on the outside.
On the inside , should be bright, or it is not clean, could be lead?

Not like that no. That's good to see as well.
It could be the blueing of the barrel. I'm comparing it to new firearms not other used so it's hard to tell.
It's just outside of the barrel, I'm assuming it's the gasses/lead. If it's the 'exhaust' then it makes sense.

Assuming it's at the shop when I make it back I'll take some pictures.

I suspect what the OP is referring to are the "flash marks" often found on the face of the muzzle area, usually quite uniform, all around.

OP, don't worry about it, this will happen every time you shoot the handgun.

Not dissing you but if you want new, buy new. Even then, factory firearms will often have "flash marks" on the muzzle face, from firing their proof rounds.

Some manufacturers polish them off, but not all.

If you look closely, they will be situated with the visible rifling.

Shooting a firearm will leave a distinct pattern on the crown over time. This is just carbon or lead, or what ever else comes out the end of your barrel when you shoot. Use a tiny bit of solvent or oil with 0000 steel wool to clean it up. If that doesn't remove it it's a permanent feature. I've cleaned guns made in the 80's and that looked to rarely be cleaned. 0000 steel wool works like a charm for cleaning them. Though it can leave little peaces, so don't use it on guns you don't plan on doing a full cleaning on.
