Read everything I could find in search on the subject. Is there any noticable recoil reduction on the ported Marlin? Has anyone shot the ported and non ported with the same load side by side for comparison?

The porting may reduce muzzle "climb", but at the expense of noise/blast, which is just as bad. i think that extra weight would be of more benefit then porting.

I've shot both. I could not tell a difference in felt recoil, they both kickedlike mules... The ported one was noticeably louder. I prefer the 22" barrelled ones, a bit better ballistics and I find the point better.

I have both in 18.5" barrels. Ported is very loud. I didnt notice any great reduction in kick and I purposely shot both, one right after the other for just that reason.

The difference was the noise. The ported is louder. (but who cares?).....

I have had the ported and non ported version of guide guns,I didn't care for the ported one.Recoil with either is a non issue.
The pistol grip is better if you want to save your knuckles..........

I have said this many times before and will say it again....

I have owned and shot both side by side as well, ported and standard barrel. I have a feeling Randy that you were probably shooting factory rounds, am I correct? I have shot close to 2000 rounds out of the three GG's I have owned. Out of those, hardly any factory rounds.

Push a 405g bullet about 1900-1950fps and let me know if you notice the same differences. Side by side I hardly noticed a difference between the two rifles in noise(both very loud), muzzle rise or recoil with these fairly heavy loads, all were obnoxious, but still fun. :50cal:

IMO the 18.5" barrel has allot to do with my observations. I have tried it many times and stand by my word. Maybe noise and muzzle flip is more noticeable with factory rounds or medium velocity handloads, I don't know as I have have never tried it in a side by side test.

If you like to shoot alone on the firing line, take a ported one, I used to have a ported guide, and people who stands around me really dislike the noise and the unburned powder that escape from these holes. Sold it after a while, and got a 22 inches one.

It is a gun, and yup, they are loud . Most outdoor gun ranges are for shooting all types of hunting rifles and I know of many rifles that are louder than a ported or non ported 18.5" 45-70. When on the firing line hearing protection is recommended at almost all ranges.

If you tell me that you can tell the difference in "noise" between a ported and standard barreled 18.5" Marlin Guide Gun while wearing proper hearing protection, you are full of poop.

Sorry man, been there and done that many times...

WHAT?? I CANT HEAR YOU :nest:

quick question...
ive never felt the urge to port my guns, but ive always wondered:
like fluting, does porting carry the risk of reducing accuracy?
we all know the rifle crown is an incredibly important factor in accuracy. but wouldnt ports that are drilled slightly off allowing the minutely uneven escape of gas also potentially affect accuracy?
ie: not a factory ported barrel but a modification by a gunsmith? im talking hundredths or thousandths of an inch here, btw - not a bubba job.

Thanks for the info. I will have one of these before spring bear!
I'd watch the EE for a used one.

Seems the Guide Gun in no longer the "Most Sought After" on CGN and a few of them are being sold after the fondling appeal wears off.

I think the 257Weatherby will be the next "Most Sought After". :D

I've shot both and couldn't notice any significant difference as far as the recoil is concerned. Didn't matter whether I was using factory loads, light cast reloads, heavy cast reloads or heavy jacketed reloads. The biggest noticeable difference is the increased sound levels when you're close by to someone shooting the ported version. Needless to say, my 1895GS is not ported, nor will it ever be. The only firearm I have that is ported is my 500 S&W, and that will be changed in the not too distant future as well.
