Best powder for .44 Magnum

I used 2400 and found it dirty. Switched to 24.0 gr. of 296.
My powder measure gave accurate charges, and with 24 gr of 748 in my 222 I never switched the setting; load 20, 40, or 60 and never weigh one charge.

I shot a S&W 29 in 6 1/2, 8 3/8 and finally the 10 5/8.

I found Unique to be 'dirty' but not 2400.

I use 7grains of win231 and 200gr lead bullet. Damn accurate, both in my revolver and my lever rifle.
My next load would be Universal. Haven't tried in my 44mag yet, but it worked awesome in my .454 casull rifle.

Just reading between the lines but I think you should seriously read a good reloading manual before continuing. If you think 231 is good for heavy loads in a 44 and you increased the load just because Joe Docks said so you need to learn a lot more about handloading before carrying on. Just to prove my point, heavy loads of fast powders like 231 can blow up guns and light loads of slow burning powders can do the same e.g. Winchesters warnings about 296. And by the way read the whole book.

296 is my preference. the 231 i reserve for the 45 acp.

i use cast bullets, and the 296 works for me in medium to full loads from a m29

do check the manuals, and start with the min range, as per gospel

I did some research and found Alliant 2400 can be the most powerfull gun powder for a 44mag. Thats what I'm gonna use next time: 200gr lead bullet, 21gr Alliant 2400 and will fire it with my Puma 44mag lever action.
