ultimate deer rifle???

Don't know if it is the ultimate deer rifle but it sure works for me. savage 99 in 300 sav.

Many ways of doing what that 99 in 300Sav does, but they could’ve quite back then and called it a deer rifle for sure. Nice balance of easy of carry, manageable recoil and power to get the job done.

This is the rig I used to carry for deer this season. Stiller Predator action / Kreiger barrel / Wildcat Composite stock … chambered in 6.5 X 47 Lapua. Pictured with targets used for my final “zero” with a single shot at each 100/200/300 M. A pretty consistent 1/2 MOA shooter with Berger 130gr Classic Hunter bullets.

There are many versions of a “deer rifle” or many ways to do what the 99 in 300savage does. I just meant that we could’ve stopped at the 99 in 300Savage and been done with it all. The different rifles, cartridges etc are all just different ways of doing the same thing. It’s light and handy, but has better range than a 94 in 30-30. It has adequate power to take deer at reasonable distances the majority of deer are killed without excessive recoil.

It’s not as easy to clean or mount a scope on as a bolt gun I’ll admit but otherwise it’s a handy “deer rifle”

Ahhh... I read it a couple times and couldn't make out your point.

well, for the win- Enfield 303 with irons or scope.
This rifle has taken more Deer than any other Rifle in this country and will probably never be Matched by any other.

"ultimate" - I believe that changes with age and experience? I started out thinking 30-06 was end all and be all - because that is what my Dad used. Then to 308 Win. Then to 7x57. Latest one that I bought for myself to use is a Ruger Compact in 243 Win - I had bought two others previously in 243 Win, one for wife to use for her first deer and one for our grandson to use. My brother is two years younger than me - he has used a 300 Win Mag, for elk, moose, deer, wolf and sheep for 30 plus years - he got his rifle about the same time that I bought my 338 Win Mag. We have taken many dozen deer and elk in various parts of Saskatchewan with those cartridges - I am sure 15 feet to 300 yards, or so - at extremes. A lot is what you have used - I have never used 270 Win, 280 Rem, 25-06, etc. but know guys who will say those are "perfect" - often the only one they have ever used - and it works well. And we met an older dude in Northern Sask. who told us his 22 rimfire Magnum was the perfect deer cartridge / rifle for him - he was not terribly interested in regulations, licences, or seasons - just what worked best for him.

Depends on the conditions. The general do-it-all for me is a quality bolt action in 7x57 or 8x57. You can substitute 6.5CM/308/30-06. My dedicated "back-up" is now my CZ 527 Carbine in x39--very capable in the right conditions.
