IMR 4227 on 7.5 Swiss and 8mm Mauser

Hi all,

I just bought this IMR 4227 cos I do not have any other option at my local bass pro shop. Everything else is out.
I wonder if anyone tried this powder on 8X57 and 7.5X55? 150gr bullets.
I dont mind starting from a reduced load since I will be shooting at an indoor range with reduced load anyway.

That powder is much better suited for CAST LEAD bullets.

It's fairly bulky and quite fast.

Use IMR 4759 data and all will be well. IMR4759 is faster than IMR4227 which is a good place to start.

BE CAREFUL, 25.0 grains over LR primers will bring you very close to 35,000 CUP, with bullets around 165gr in the 8x57

25.0 grains of IMR4227 is also a good load for the 7.5x55 with 150-165 grain bullets

Velocities will be around 2100-2200 fps, depending on the individual rifle.

Perfect! Thanks! That is exactly the info I am looking for. Have to write it down!
One question though, is this powder too fast for rifle to use hence the smaller load? My normal data is around 40gr with Benchmark and BL-C2

No, it will work just fine in your rifles.

Pressures will be well within the tolerances of your firearms.

Yes, it's way faster than Benchmark and BLC2

What's nice is that it's bulkier and should give a better case fill, which is often conducive to better accuracy.

If you're shooting at an indoor range, and they allow cast lead bullets, you may want to look into purchasing a 500 count box of 150-165 grain cast/gas check bullets.

That will cut your reloading costs in half
 
Lee has data which probably came from the older IMR booklets. Bearhunter is right on spec with the Lee data.
 
If you are using IMR 4227, it is an excellent choice for cast lead bullets. These days it seems cast lead bullet manufacturers are some of the few still
delivering product. Cast lead rifle bullets can be an excellent choice out to 300 yards, depending on the caliber and condition of the bore.
 
You could ask around and see about trading the powder you have to someone nearby for something more suitable. Would be nice to do load development with what you hope to use in the long term.
