Any experts here?
Inscribed no.5 mk1 ROF
9/44
Has all the lighting cutouts, and looks like all the internet photos, except that the butt stock is from a Lee Enfield no.4 mk1 and stamped '45' in the wood on the right side of the butt stock, and 'N O 4' faintly painted on the left side of the butt stock. The butt stock seams poorly fitted and there seems to be some glue filler used between the action and the wood.

Any help would be appreciated.

It sounds like someone was sensitive to recoil, and replaced the No5 stock with a No4 stock, they're easier on the shoulder. Replacement No5 stocks are available, both original and repro. What's the max range on the sight? Incidentally, wood glue should not be used as a filler at the wrist - and never was at the factory.

Got pics? I bet it's a correct No.5 (I refuse to call them 'jungle carbines') with a No.4 butt and mismatched bolt from a No.4. Maybe the rear sight too and should be 800 yards if original. Then, make sure the flash hider and bayonet lug are not messed with or removed.

Reproduction stocks you can try prestigious wood stocks. Original stocks you can find but usually they come from someone’s attic. You just don’t walk into a store and find them. I am going to pickup an original over the next few days which the fellow has had in his attic for over 30 years.

Sight is correct 800 yards. The electric pencil is correct for a (ROF) F (Royal Ordnance Factory, Fazackerley) but it looks quite 'artistic' compared to others I've seen. What is the scaly rough stuff below it? It would be nice to bring this one back to life given its early date.

I was going give it a good cleaning but wondered if t would effect it's value...I'm guessing not lol. Most of the crud is oil hardened oil I think.

I put a No4 butt on my No5 and I very much prefer it.
It's more accurate , likely because of the longer length of pull / eye relief and much more manageable.
It was like a whole different rifle.
I now suspect the No5 buttstock is another reason for the " wandering zero " that some shooters have had.

The bolt serial number
FC2037O(orC)A

On the back of the bolt/bolt pull back thing
FYM K1 and maybe another 1

Bolt head
a B on one side
a 1 on the top of the square flat.

The firering pin is broken off, where it was necked down I think.

Just my 2 cents...the serial numbers were under decades of crud, maybe under the original packing grease. Also the no.4 stock is so poorly fitted that someone who wanted to fake it as a jungle model would have left, or fitted another jungle butt stock to it...no?
