Black powder cannons

That's fantastic!
It puts my little .45 caliber cannon to shame.
How much black powder do you use in a typical load?

I usually play the Doctor, so am not sure on the exact amount. Our last official event in the summer, the cannon crews used approximately 15 pounds of 1-2F powder.

Yes, I can imagine that cannon eats up a lot of powder! I'm still on my 1st pound of powder as my .45 cannon doesn't use much.
Will you guys start doing the reenactments again in the Spring sometime? If they are open to the public it would be great to attend and watch you guys put that big cannon through its paces.

I use 300 gr of single F in a 1 5/8 bore cannon and 1/4 lb in a 2 5/8 bore for each shot . I use the same chrge for "blanks" as I do for rounds with a projectile. I have fired a 1/2 lb charge in the big tube with a 3 lb "grape" load in front of it a couple of times but the smaller charges give the same effect & muzzle blast as the more powerful load so, being a lot cheaper, I use the smaller loads as a rule. The biggest difference between the "grape load & the smaller load is the recoil roll of the field piece. The smaller blank loads will just wiggle the gun back a few inches but that larger charge & weight of the grape, that gun (total weight is probably 800-1000 lbs) will roll back 4 ft in an instant....get out of its road as its coming!!

If you are still asking the question re cannon availability, check out Loyalist Firearms in NS. I have bought from them, and another Armory in Ontario whose name escapes me. I bought a 1 in swivel gun, which fire blanks or a 4 oz sinker.
The best one is a 2.5 in coehorn mortar than launches beer cans filled with ice or concrete. Great boom, rings like a bell. This mortar is machined from a billet of steel. Most others have a steel liner in a cast body.
Both of these are one-man portable and consume up to 400g powder for full effect.
Located in North Bay.

Oh absolutely! We have several events in 2022. One in February (hopefully!) at The Military Museums, although I’m not sure if the cannon will be firing that time
Also The Summer Skirmish at TMM in July is a big cannon event.
Please feel free to contact me privately for further information.

Cheers,

Jon.

Will do.
Happy New Year!
