For all the SKS fans!

before that nasty boating accident i had 3

1) Russian numbers matching, wood stock, shooter grade
2) Russian numbers matching, tapco
3) Bubba special, numbers all over the place, cut off bayonet, wood stock

for shooting i actually like the bubba and tapco the most.

Id never modify an original condition one but if prices keep climbing you may see 1) on the EE. Well, that would be if i still had it of course...

Some rifles are meant to be customized, some are not.
The SKS falls into the later category..
Moding the SKS would be like moding an old, reliable piece of farm machinery...just enjoy it for what it is instead.

While it might be tempting to put on some modern features, or to make it look like something else (because of the relatively low price tag), there will come a point where the prices will climb.
When that happens, it will be the original configuration that is sought after...

Wood stock. Apparently the internet will rinse you if you put any poly stocks on these things.

I've got a Russian tula 1953r. Free floating pin. Shoots fine put 100 rounds through it the first day I got it. No FTF or any issues what so ever.

I got mine covered in cosmo and sold as a refurb non matching. Upon cleaning I discovered the rifle is actually all matching! What a surprise!

Cosmo is fine. Please thoroughly clean it. Take the bolt out. Inspect the firing pin. Air blast, clean, and lube the #### out of it.

Great little rifles and lots of fun to shoot....thanks USSR!
Honestly, the Russian ones in particular are very well made with good materials, and with chrome lined barrels will last a lifetime or two or three. Just keep them clean after using, and watch for crud buildup around the firing pin in the bolt. I always thought the concern about slam firing was over emphasized....until I had it happen.
I have owned 2 Russians and really enjoyed both, and agree that keeping them closer to original is best.
But, I picked up MagWedge full length scope rails for both, just to make longer distance shooting a bit easier. These rails are easy to install, and not really a big deal to remove for cleaning. Also easy to remove to return the SKS to original condition.
One interesting experiment was bedding the action (yes, really!!) of my second one. It went from basically covering an 8" target with 20 rounds (at 100 yds) to nice tight 2.5-3.5" 20 round groups using surplus ammo. For me it made the SKS ownership experience much better. Look up Riflechair's SKS bedding videos on YouTube. POI will still wander a bit depending on how hot your barrel is, but still much more satisfying.

When a Russian SKS runs at $700+ on the E&E, it ought to give modifiers some "pause"... ;)

I’ve been saying for years that the SKS is the Lee Enfield of this era in terms of bubba ####ing up pristine rifles and making the unmolested ones worth more.

It's Milsurp forum. If you wanted helpful advice on Modding it...hit up the boys in Red Rifles. Modding here is like spitting on the cross.
So as far as Modding help here? "You done taken a wrong turn!" Deliverance Quote right there
Me, had both, both were fun.

I've used and favored the SKS in some extremely stressful situations, under some very adverse conditions.

For it's designed purpose, it's a fantastic tool and absolutely reliable, if maintained properly.

I've been close up and personal with it for over 50 years and I honestly don't see a thing wrong with it, other than I would like one in 5.56x45 Nato.

That's about to come to fruition.

Picked up a barreled receiver from the EE and it's on its way.

Now, I need to find another for donor parts.

I need everything, other than a barrel/stock/receiver.

If anyone here has a beater they're looking to get out of the safe, Russian please, I would appreciate a PM.

The SKS is great for those that don't appreciate the ergonomics of firearms with pistol grips, which just don't fit everyone.

Once I get the parts, I will have to decide which magazines to adapt it for. Lots of AR and Mini magazines being dumped right now.

Post a pic or two in the Red Rifles forum... if it's bone stock, it might not offend Tokguy ;)

Oh, perhaps I wasn't clear, LoL.
A solid 1/2 of mine are modded... I really don't care if they are original. OEM makes them a lot more valuable and a lot less fun IMO
I'll snap up an OEM if a deal comes along, but then one can't really use them as they were intended.
I shuffled off my orginal Select USSR SKS...got a Colt New Service in 45 LC...great trade.
But my shooter's...modded. Ross M 10, several K98's, 1894 Krag 30-40 as well...can't afford these rifles in OEM. Ties up too much money in 'Safe Queens'...but sure affordable if sportered. Every one is Blooded by deer hunting
I modded an SKS and an M/N 31/90... wouldn't do it again, but no apologies for doing it.
Got a few safe queens of course, but getting fewer all the time.
The OP really did need to hit Red Rifles...way better feedback on SKS's there. He's welcome here, but will love that posts up there much more IMO

It was just tongue in cheek. The modded guns are also fun to play with. I do believe, however, Admin should eliminate the Red Rifles forum. Unaltered cold war stuff belongs here. Modded stuff or modern stuff belongs in the Black Riles section, which should be renamed. Red Rifles was created out of snobbery.
