Ontario Mandatory Reporting Penalty Decision

January 14th is the last day to do the deer report for Ontario.
Thanks for the reminder. I didn't even go moose hunting but good thing I checked up on the other guys. Guy that had calf tag hadn't done it.
What i dont get is it asks the number of live animals youve seen. If i hunt for 5 days and see the same 30 turkeys each day do i report 150 turkeys seen? When i called for clarification i was told by the mnr thats how to do it. So how does that average out as there arent 150 birds in that block

I spoke with the mnrf biologist once about the surveys. I mentioned I always lie on my survey and asked what that meant for him. He said that with the statistics they run on the data that my survey would be tossed. If your numbers are way outside the norm for the area they get tossed via the stats.
He never did flights. No budget for such expenditures. Extra deer tags were only considered when friends of the MPP brought it up and they mentioned it to the Minister. If the surveys looked good he would consider it, if not he politely told the Minister to pound sand.
Talking to the MNR is almost a waste of time. The biologists have already made up their mind and the CO’s say they make recommendations and they are rarely acted on.
Our WMU’s deer archery season always ends on 15 Dec no matter what day that falls on. All the neighboring WMU’s season goes to the end of the year. When we inquire we’re told it’s always been like that. We knew that, that’s why we’ve been asking pretty much every year.
Wtf, no answers, no logic, it’s almost like they would lose face if they changed it. My good old departed buddy would say “ the inmates are running the asylum” . He was right…

Ontario game management is so far behind the United States. Our seasons and harvest quotas are decided by insurance companies and bureaucrats They cannot even collect enough scientific data to make good management decisions. And if you think that they do just look at the Ontario Spring bear hunt debacle. There is zero funding for game management in this province. Proof, they are getting hunters to do it for them. Which are often bias and report incorrectly in attempts to correct what they think will help their hunting areas.
Ontario populations are at best 1/10th of the US states. So do you want more taxes, higher licences fees or spend 2 minutes on the computer telling them what you observed while hunting. Not sure why people think what they see in all the hours they hunt isn't valuable info. How many biologists would they have to hire to spend that much time outdoors?
As for the few who lie thinking it helps, those are the flyers that get thrown out in any statistical analysis, so really makes no difference. Since most of us are honest and do our best the 10% or so that try to manipulate the systems just get effectively ignored.
It takes longer to open your browser, look up the website and log in than it does filling the actual survey. I did all of this year's surveys in about 5 minutes and I had 8 tags for Saskatchewan, I believe I got 7 surveys to do total (didn't get one for either-### whitetail).
I always get a laugh when guys went through hunter safety, firearms safety course(s), tag purchases, scouting, hunting, etc, but can't be bothered to do an actual survey or mandatory reporting... You always see comments like "nOt eVeRyOnE hAs InTerNeT AcCesS" or "wHaT aBoUt mY 99Yo GrAnDfAtHer"... Most online reporting/surveys have a dial-in option.

It's all about averages meaning your one report means very little in the grand scheme of things. For example, if you and a bunch of other hunters in your unit send in similar reports it will suggest a healthy population. But if most hunters 2 units over report seeing 5 birds each day the data suggests the population is lower in that unit. Using this data they can get an idea of populations and to see where species are spreading (reintroduced turkey and elk) for future hunting opportunities.
Reporting is definitely not accurate, but it gives a general idea of what's going on in each unit. With the MNRF being so short on funds and manpower, reporting is a very valuable tool.
I dislike the government more than most and don't like being told what to do, but it's not really hard to figure out that these reports benefit game populations which in turn benefits me.

Excellent visual for people to see. Note how reporting % increased with mandatory reporting. For deer the reporting doubled over 2 years.
It's funny how those with superiority complexes complain about mandatory reporting the most, but it's these exact people who weren't doing reports which forced the government to make it mandatory. If these people would have been reporting the whole time there'd be no need to make anything mandatory...
