Advice Needed: New hunting Rifle

your number2 is actually number one.... make no mistake tikka is the rifle all others are compared to .....they made others put some accuracy into there offerings...or at least try to out of the box..no fixin no smithin no bag of upgrades JUST SHOOT EM

So I have a $2000 max budget for a new hunting rifle. Just rifle not optic. I mainly hunt for deer and bear. There are a lot of great rifles in this price range. What would you get? Once I get a few options I will go see which ones feel and fit best. Right now my list is.

1. Christensen Arms Mesa
2. Tikka T3x stainless laminate
3. Winchester model 70
4. Sako S20

Tikka T3X in a SS Lite or Superlite in 270 or 30-06 would be a GREAT Choice ! I LIKE my 4 ! Also a Kimber HUNTER is a Great choice TOO if you can find one ! jmo RJ

I definitely prefer to get out and walk so I don't want a tank. That being said I work out doors and pack a vest that is 20lbs so it's not a really big deal. ...

That helps - Have you carried a rifle for this kind of hunting before though? I have to ask, because 20lbs in a properly fitted vest carries much easier than 8lbs on a shoulder sling.

And how thick is the brush you'll be in? If you're constantly ducking, then a 20" or even 18" barrel can really be worth the compromise.

Sounds like you're probably already plenty fit but if you're looking at "maximum effort" kind of hunting, then the lightest and shortest rifle possible might be more of the direction you look. Horses for courses...

I would get a T3 hunter with a wood stock
And a $10 trigger spring, and 1 extra magazine.

Talley rings and a scope and you have everything for your $2000 rifle only budget

(and can spend the money you were going to spend on an optic on something else.)

Epps has a real beauty for sale... T3x Forest in 8x57 with Sako sights and set trigger. It doesn't get any better than that. A beautiful rifle with high quality fit and finish that probably shoots MOA out of the box. Scope it and go hunting.

Or, Prophet River has two beautiful CZ 557 Lux's in 8x57. One is the standard Carbine model and the other is the Lux 2 with the 24 inch barrel (w/ bolt that locks on loading and set trigger). Both are real gems that also probably shoot MOA out of the box.

I like the CZ better, but both will get you going, and with a little class.

Have you got any personal experience with the CZ 557 Lux? I have been eying them up however I don't have the availability to handle one prior to buying nor do I know anyone who has that particular rifle. Online reviews are favorable..

I owned two: a Lux 2 and a Lux. I sold the Lux 2 and kept the Lux. It's probably my top 3 favorite modern wood stocked hunting rifle, of the many I own or owned. Accurate, refined, smooth, and well made. I really like the sights too--fast target acquisition.

Do you currently own a rifle or are you familiar with any. Consider what makes you like or dislike any rifles you have used. For me, It's all about the features and feel of the rifle. I own several "hunting" rifles and my experiences with my current and past rifles shapes my wants for the new ones.

Things to consider:
Magazine type? I won't buy a hunting rifle that doesn't have a removable magazine whereas a hinged floor plate is perfectly fine for most people.
Sights? I always use a scope, but some people like to have open sights even if they have a scope, just in case.
Safety type? I prefer a 2 position safety that locks the bolt and has a button to release the bolt. I also like the safety to be mounted on the top/side of the action behind the closed bolt knob.
Action material? I thought I would prefer stainless for the barrel and receiver, but I now feel the best combination is a stainless barrel on a chromoly receiver.
Stock material? wood, plastic, fiberglass and carbon fiber are all common. I prefer synthetics on my big game rifles, but my shotguns and plinking 22 are a mixed bag.

There's a lot missing from the list, including the complicated matter of action mechanism and, if you choose a bolt action, controlled or push feed. I purposely didn't mention my reasons for my choices, because they are mostly just personal preference and shouldn't matter to you. All that matters is that there are a lot of different ways to make a great rifle, Tt's worth considering what options you do and don't want or care about before you start talking brands. I was interested in a Weatherby Vanguard, until I held one and fiddled with it. Nice rifles, just not for me.

You can get a new Weatherby Mark V Hunter for under $2000 from Prophet River.

I was really tempted but ended up buying a new Winchester model 70 featherweight in .270 Win and had enough left over to buy a Leupold VX3HD scope

2 k will go a long way on the used market

Older sako, someone’s custom Mauser or model 70 etc

Another vote for kimber hunter and the rest towards glass here

Ya, I particularly like the sights on that rifle. How is the weight for packing all day?
