Side charging AR uppers

I think that is the best mod going for the ar.
I had a chance to mess around with one designed by Lee Hadaway formerly of Scattergun Tech. I like it for one reason..you can charge the weapon without bringing the rifle down from your shooting position.
But I was trained on the C1A1..

If there is a failure to eject or extract, I want to know how one can pull the charging handle to the back while engaging the bolt stop to perform a clearance, especially with one of those where the round is partly stripped and you have to yank the mag out while at the same time the bolt needs to be fully retracted

I will stick to the old system for now.

Or double feed from plastic mags with split lips during a carbine course :D

Regards,

Thanks for your input guys I appreciate the insight. As is said, experience is the best teacher. What I haven't learned here will most likely be self evident when I get to play with it.

I did come across another rather unique side charger.

This one looks to take into account most of the issues perceived by some of the posters. What do you think?

I played with some proto models with the charging handle on left side.

It makes you eat a lot of gas.
Enjoy the advantages of the gas inpingement system ;)

Thats a neat looking setup, but it looks like the shell deflector may get in the way of the side bolt handle.
If it's designed properly (shaped and positioned where it's really supposed to be), the charging handle on the right side is the shell deflector.

yes, thats true (like the PE90). But it appears that M4's charging handle attaches in somewhat the same fassion as the Benelli Super 90 series (with a detent pin) so i dont know if it would cut it. In any case, i wonder if they could chop the shell delfector off?
