High Wall cleaning kit

My Uberti High Wall 32” bbl arrived today and of course there’s an area in the pistol grip stock for a cleaning rod. Called around for cleaning kits for this 45-70 and getting a lot of nopes and dunnos. Suggestions?

No doubt I’ll feel dumb when someone gives me a simple answer.

I made a rod out of two .30 cal rods, both had broken handles. I drilled a 5" piece of broom handle epoxied it to the proper end section, added 2 middle sections and 1 "end" section, 4 sections in all. More than long enough for any barrel I want to clean. I made a leather pouch to carry it in and keep it in my range bag.

I see Taylor’s &Co has a universal brass cleaning rod(s) which I think would be perfect. Just have to find a dealer up here who sells it. Might try Marstar tomorrow for there Pedersoli products.

get a driveway fiberglass marker ..the solid one....one that fits your bore......cut to 4 in longer than your bbl.....put a 3855 case in a drill press or a 30 30 cut off at the neck.......put case in a drill press and spin a nice rounded depression in the base ...sort of ball like... start with a bigger drill the bit in the primer pocket. .brass is soft....do not go through the flash hole use what you got and polish with sand papers....epoxy the case to one end of rod and drill a hole into a golf ball half way ..epoxy rod in place after you ruff up the part that goes in the ball so it bonds better to rubber inside the ball.....dry for 24 hrs polish case end and thats it .......makes the best rod you will ever have.....good luck don

Look at a Bore Snake.

Historically, the tool would have been a weight on one end, and a jag on the other, of a braided cotton rope that would have been the pull-through.

Yeah that’s an option got a couple of them around.

Are you going to be shooting black powder or smokeless? We all clean from the breech. Most of us use delrin rods 48" long. These may be had from Buffalo Arms. They will ship to Canada. Stay away from fiberglass very abrasive. Nylon coated dewey rods are excellent as well.

Smokeless to start but eventually I know I’ll want to try bp. Appreciate the tips.

What about a 46” Tipton rod? Also, can I assume you can’t use a bore guide with a fb 1885?

You can drill out the primer hole in a 45-70 case to just over your cleaning rod diameter, slip the case onto your rod and then attach the tip of choice.
Get the rod started just past the chamber and then slide the case into chamber.
The case will keep your rod centered in the bore.
Get yourself a cover for your butt stock while cleaning so you don't bang or drip solvent on it.
I find a silicone baking sheet works OK.

Great tips thanks. Tipton rod ok? Also, I’m only shooting smokeless (for now) how often do I need to clean the bore, seems to be differing opinions on this.

A Tipton rod of correct size(dia.)(and length) should work fine.
I use a Hoppes SS rod, can't remember where I got it, it's at least 40" long and about .35 diameter and weighs a ton.
I have a Pedersoli 1885 and shoot cast bullets 370-531gr and Unique powder, have used gas check bullets, pan lubed bullets, powder coated bullets.
I'm lucky in that my bore does not lead up, I clean fairly thoroughly after every range trip. (50-60 shots)
