The 30-30 club, are you in?

Beautiful guns in here. Do you guys think there's a chance I may regret a 30-30 for hunting in Ontario? I'm itching for a 336, but the 1895s are also calling to me - do I just go big right away, or is there really no need for it in this province? Deer and bear, and maybe a moose hunt in the distant future.

No Ontario hunter has ever regretted a 3030.

I'd shoot any moose with one within 100m and have full confidence it will die rather quickly. 150m is probably fine too.

Hunting, daily, with a 336 can be a nuisance - load, unload, load, unload. Not a firearm I would ever let a noobie (to the action) use around other people without supervision. That is me.

I sit out in all kinds of weather and it is not as handy as a bolt with a detachable magazine to clean at the end of a rainy day as well.

With that said, my 336 is a great treestand gun in the thick bush at my camp. I have a 2x-6x Leupold on it and it stays on 2x. (I'd go lower....) Short and easy to swing around. More than enough gun as long as (with any calibre), you put the bullet in the right place.

JMO.

Thank you guys for the great input. I won't be hunting daily regardless but the load/unload comment is interesting - whats the big deal about loading a few rounds at the start of the hunt and unloading them at the end?

I'm also looking at the Henry with a side gate and removable tube, if that makes things simpler....

Depends where and how you hunt. Out for the morning hunt, load. Come into camp or get in a vehicle, unload (unless you're still hunting...). Back out in the afternoon, load. Before legal shooting light ends the hunt, unload and encase. It is doing it several times, (trying to catch the ejected shells or picking up from the ground) and proving the firearm safe around others that can be a nuisance.

If you hunt alone...do whatever floats your boat.

I see what you mean. Im comfortable with that, but it's a fair point regardless.

The thing that had me considering 45-70 was the "brush" penetration issue but I can't wrap my head around needing to penetrate such thick brush while still being certain that a shot is safe to take in the first place.

30-30 it is!

Jacking rounds out of the rifle with a tube mag gun is the same as doing so with a blind, stacked mag on a bolt gun. Just bump the round forward a bit and dump it in your hand. No need to work it through the action. It's safe (no chance of discharge if not chambered) and more convenient, as rounds are not flying all over the place. With a bit of practice it's second nature.

Brush busting rounds are a myth, so far as deflection is concerned. However, heavier bullets may have more energy remaining after passing through brush, if they connect. I've used the 170 grain loads for the 30-30 for moose, black bear and deer with success.

Purchased my first 30-30, 1940 Winchester 94. It’s in very nice shape and will put it use this fall for hunting from my stand for whitetail. Looking forward to it!

Got this old thing in the past year.

My old man has a win 94. It was handed down to him by an old timer that taught him to hunt. I carried it for my first deer hunts growing up. Not looking forward to the day its mine, but for sure it will never be sold! Took it to the range this winter and still shoots pretty straight. Love the classic lever.
