Does anybody know how difficult it would be to fit an AK paddle type safety to a Type 81 rifle?

well i will be on the right side and here many are complaining about it so i cant imagine the big lever on the right side. i ve seen at least one t81 with an ak lever fitted. you shoud ask bfiles.

Is the safety throw 90 degrees or 180 degrees on the Type 81?

I'm not sure if just tapping the pin would work, or if a new pin with shorter travel would have to be machined.

Anybody know how large the throw is on the AK safety? Probably only like 30 degrees or something similar.

Having an AK paddle on the right could be a good solution for guys with the Optics Ready setup.

it is 180 degrees rotations.

Yeah, so definitely more complicated that just tapping the current safety pin. A new pin with shorter travel would have to be machined and then attached to the AK paddle for it to function properly.

Ypu would need to custom make a paddle selector that could switch from semi to safe in 30 degrees. That's all really.

Would possibly need a more elaborate spring system as well to hold the paddle in the 2 positions. Also a spot on the lower step of the receiver that can support the end of the paddle when off safe so its supported. I see the guy on Facebook basically welded or epoxied an unsightly pad on the lower step to accomplish this.

Yeah would definitely need an overtravel stopper. Perhaps that could be made internal. A selector detent and spring could be incorporated into the receiver to accomplish this perhaps?

Then why did I ask?

Would genuinely like to know. I remember a guy on here last year putting one on an 81, doing cerakote and posting it on the EE for $3000+

Probably the same guy, hes pretty active on some Facebook groups... and it looks like he does great work! But it also appears to be quite permanent, and not easy install.

Yeah, it looked very nice. The one I’m thinking of had a great cerakote job and refinished wood.

Made it seem like the selector was a lot of fitting work. Hopefully one can come up with one without needing to send it to a smith.
