Advise for a Newbie on CZ 858’s

Hey, another question from a newbie
I am wanting to get something that is a lot of fun to shoot. I always wanted an AR-15, but reading the exchange forms for a the past few weeks they seem to be a little pricy. I see some CZ 858’s for sale that is more in my price range. I currently have a CZ 75B 40SW that I am very pleased with. I do have a couple of questions.
1. Is this a reliable firearm?
2. Some of the add’s mention no non-corrosive ammo – what is non-corrosive ammo?
 
Regarding corrosive ammo, that term refers to some military surplus ammo that is for sale. Most sellers will state if the ammo is corrosive, assuming that they know.

The primers contains certain chemicals that leave a hygroscopic residue in the gun. In the barrel , gas piston if applicable. If not cleaned out totally soon after shooting, these chemicals will trap moisture and start corroding the metal. Water can be used to flush out the gun but make sure to dry it after.

It can be an inexpensive way to shoot & for some calibers, perhaps about the only way if no commercial ammo is available.

I have seen a number of barrels ruined by corrosive ammo and not cleaning so my suggestion is to avoid it. If you do use it, make sure to clean the gun right away.
 
Reliability :
I have one, do a search on the "gremlin" afflicting this version. Been there, need to test the new bolt carrier now.

Corrosive ammo :
You are absolutly required to clean the rifle perfectly after each shooting session but the rifle is very easy to field strip and clean. The fact that this version don't have a chrome bore is not that big of a factor since you would have to clean the rifle entirely anyway.
 
I owned 2 858s one had a chrome lined barel and the other one didnt.Since its a good idea to clean after every shoot it didnt matter if i used corrosive ammo or not.What i did find is that i liked my non chrome one better.It had a better finish on it than the chrome one and shot better for me.They are basicaly the same gun but made by differant manufacturers.
 
I have never owned a Cz but after seeing them at the range, I believe the are a great gun and are way better than an sks which is what most people compare them to.Also most come with a good number of accesories so that you don't have to buy other stuff in the beginning.
 
I originally bought a chrome lined bbl restricted version, then decided to get a non-chromed bbl non-restricted one as well. I found the non-chromed bbl to be far more time consuming to clean (no brainer), so I got rid of it. They're definitely fun guns, and I've never had any problems with any of the ones which have crossed my path.
 
If you want cheap ammo then you are going to be shooting corrosive ammo. It's nothing to worry about if you clean your firearms properly after shooting. Your barrel isn't going to rust immediately after firing like some people seem to think but you do have to clean it after every outing. The gun has been reliable for me and I'm finishing up my first crate of ammo and starting in on my second.

Never fired an SKS but I've held one and I really like the feel of the 58/858 to that of the SKS. Seems like it fit me better. I've really enjoyed my 858 and would never sell it.
 
cleaning

im not obsess about cleaning and cloth in the bore need not come out super clean and i dont have any probelm.

i use this process after using corrosive ammo , makes no different whether its chrome bore or not, i hang the receiver/barrel over the tub and at the bottom is a tray of parts, i pour one litre of hot water down the barrel, i dry it right away (be sure to wear rubber gloves) and after it cooled , i clean as usual.

i use a bristle paint brush to apply oil , goes on fast.
 
Reliability is good so long as the rifle you get isn't a candidate for the Gremlin. However, the gremlin usually presents itself before you're through that first case of ammo and is an easy fix. After it's fixed there is little worry it'll come back.

Corrosive ammo is a concern, but not as big a deal as you've been led to believe. The trick is cleaning the rifle very well after use. After some practice you'll be able to get it surgically clean in under 20 minutes.
 
Well, i bit the bullet and purchased a CZ 858 from wolverine supplies for the same price as the ones on the exchange but with more stuff

thats a good deal, i bot mine over a year ago for the same price without the goodies.:(
 
Update - received on Christmas eve, a buddy of mine have me 100 rounds as a Christmas present. Went to the range, and had 20 minutes of heaven. Shoots nice, very accurate. Installed the Black Synthetic furniture on Christmas Day (little tricky) and she looks great. The best 650 i ever spent
 
I fired one a few weeks ago, what a beauty!

I grabbed 2240 rounds from Epps and plan on getting the rifle in a few weeks. :runaway:

Is there any legal issue with using the 10 rounds stripper clips?
