Migratory Bird Permits - How soon to purchase?

I had ordered my permit from the Canadian Gov't mid summer.
I just received my stamps today.
Hunting season ended January 2nd.
Leave it to Canada to be on top of things.

How ahead of season do you guys generally apply for the permits?
I know I can print it and use that legally, but... come on. Is this because of Covid, or because the Liberals don't like hunters?
I can walk into any Canadian Tire and get the provincial permits on the spot, but the feds have to do things their own way.

At least this coming Turkey season should be easier. Last spring Quebec had a curfew, and we could not be outside from 8 PM to 5 AM, which makes it hard to get into the bush and in your blind 30 minutes before sun up. Anyone else getting anxious for Turkey? Too soon? I'm already shining up the shotgun in anticipation...
 
I generally order mine online in August as our early goose season starts in early September.
I don't bother ordering a stamp. I just print off the copy.
As an aside, our duck season ended today.
My neighbour and I finished the season with 9 widgeon and 3 mallards today.

wow interesting to hunt waterfowl that late.
 
I had no clue I could buy them at the post office. I will try there this year, thanks for the info.

Wow, that is a late hunt for duck. Do you have open water still where you are? In my area ducks move on about 1 month into the season, so if you miss your chance your luck of finding any drop to almost nil.
 
you do realize the stamp is just a collectable item and not actually required to have it in hand right?
Your legal after you buy your permit, if you choose the stamp option for collectable purposes it will be sent but you don't need it.
 
Yeah, I knew you can print them, but I didn't know people kept them as a collectible. I was more surprised at how long it took to have them shipped, but now that I know you can buy the permit at the post office, I'll go that route the next time.

We have some ditches that have opened up again after our Christmas to new years plus cold spell.
Generally we have some open water regardless of the cold.
Unfortunately with the recent melt, there is water in a lot of fields and the ducks have been preferring the middle of fields to more easily accessible ditches and sloughs.

Ha Ha! Newb! just kidding... but the Post Office was the ONLY place you could get them for DECADES! The online option has been a blessing for those who either forgot to get one before opening day, or were suddenly invited to partake in a waterfowl hunt and had no way to get to the PO. Like most others here, I get mine at the PO in August before the season opens in September.

The current permit is good until March 31 to cover some late seasons. The next ones should be available shortly thereafter to cover the spring Snow Goose season? Presumably, since I've never tried to buy until later summer.

You're right on the money there... that was my main point in joining this forum, to learn as much as I could. I figure the more you know, the safer you'll be and maybe meet some interesting people at the same time.
I don't see too many hunters from Quebec here though, so I wonder if there is a Quebec specific forum for hunters? I'd love to learn the ins and outs of Wild Turkey hunting, rabbit, duck and goose... just knowing where to go and finding someone to go with, the knowledge gained can't be bought. I'm working up my courage for deer season now...
