Moose Call Suggestions

Hey guys & gals,

Was wondering if I could get some electronic Moose call suggestions? I have previously used a Johnny Stewart Attractormax which was amazingly successful, but it's just about on it's last legs and not in reliable working condition anymore. I tried an iHunt (by Ruger I believe) this past season but the sound seemed a bit unnatural with a bit of static/radio kind of noises. I've seen some stuff about Cocall 2 online which looks tempting, but the volume doesn't seem overly impressive.
 
Use the one you were born with. If that one runs out of batteries your in deep trouble.

Learn how to cow call and grunt carry a scapula/shed/ or some thing to rake with and your golden. Piss on electronic calls for moose hunting.

Learn to call nothing gets the juice flowing like a hot bull coming to your call . I still dream of past hunts where my calling payed off .

Fox Pro, Use the remote to set the call away from you or on the ground while you sit in a tree. You can use it for calling a lot of other critters as well.

If you watch enough videos you will realize that you can make just about any call that doesn't sound like a cat in heat and it will pass as a moose call. An uncle of mine once blew his nose real loud and 50yds behind him a bull grunted (just once). As Sask Hunter says practice cow calls and bull grunts and don't overuse them and you will never need batteries.
 
I got into moose calling a few years back and while i will not profess to be a great moose caller, the success we have had proves the technique works.
I used a call made from a fallen birch as it is a time tested material for moose calls. I have retired that call a few years ago and it sits on the shelf as a keepsake now. The call I use now is one I made myself out of a material that would also allow me to mimic moose antler scraping /raking sounds.
I made a cone out of carboard about a foot long to use as the mold (removed at the end) and from canadian tire I grabbed a fiberglass repair kit that has the resin and cloth needed.
wrapped the carboard cone in saran wrap and then followed the instructions on the resin. It was pretty easy to come up with a fiberglass cone about 1/8th to 3/16 thick. I shaped the mouth end into the top of the cone so it formed a nice rolled smooth edge. It works really well and the resonation in the call is awesome. raking it on trees or branches mimics scapula or antler scraping. It's darn near indestructable too.
A guy could just go buy one of those Primos moose calls that are shaped like a birch bark cone but they don't sound right to me.

Making calls is easy once you start to get the hang of it. Ontario Outdoors has a Moose Calling series on youtube that is excellent. There are also some fantastic videos from a couple quebec moose hunters.
Another item I carry that also can be used as a raking device or for scooping up water and "peeing it" onto the ground to mimic a moose cow urinating is a "mickey" sized plastic vodka bottle. They are kinda flask shaped and you cut off the bottom 30% of the bottle and keep the lid. A friend swears by this simple device and it was discovered watching one of the quebec moose calling videos (in english, not translated)

X3. Watch some you tube videos. Moose are very easy to mimic. Unless you have some kind of burning desire to lug a bunch of electronics around the bush?

It happened to me this year and man it was a cool experience! Many many years of hunting moose and it was the first time one came out that hot!! Not even using my hands to call(grunts at that point) and just bashing trees with a big stick!!

Learning to call moose with your own voice is not that hard.

Learning how/where/when, then figuring out how a bull is responding to a call, that's the art.

But an electronic call? No way...

I heard someone once had a moose come in to a chain saw that wouldn't start.

I'm not great at calling either but I made one out of an old cardboard strike sign from my union and duct-taped it into a cone. Easily replaceable too, I got a stack of them when the office was downsizing and moving.

45ACPKING's fibreglassing of a cardboard cone sounds like a clever idea.
 
Just use your natural voice and practice moaning and groaning. I have had cows pissing with nothing but a cupped hand. The year I stopped moose hunting I had the biggest bull out in a slough and thought I 'am glad I don't have a tag he would be a ##### to get out. A few minutes later after moaning and groaning he walked out on the road behind my truck. It would have been the biggest moose I ever got.
 
When bull moose are in the heat of things, I consider them to be one of the easiest animals to call in.
A person can make truly pathetic sounds with their voice and it will still work :), but spending the time to learn what the different sounds may mean and to imitate it the best you can would obviously be worth it.

Electronic calls are illegal to use in Alberta for big game, but if they were not, I would only be tempted to use one if I was stuck in a tree stand to get the sound away from me a bit and orientated to the wind better for a shot. Hunting on foot and being mobile I wouldn’t want to hump a call around, it isn't necessary and I have enough crap in my pack as it is.
 
Your own voice and a plastic bleach bottle, bottom cut at an angle is all you need. Some guys copy Shockey and carry a paddle, others carry the scapula from a previous kill.

I’ve made a few over the years in a similar fashion using a traffic cone as a mold. I actually made one for a buddy a few weeks ago. This is my latest version with a string epoxied around. It makes it sound less tinny and gives it more rubbing action when scraping willows and alders.

Well done ^^^! I might try that, I have a cone and lots of fibreglass Kevlar and even carbon fibres!
 
Just make one. Or use your hands. A bad moose call made by you will be as good as any electronic call.

When they're in the mood a loud fart will do the trick. When they aren't in the mood, an electronic call won't help any more then cupped hands
