Moose Call Suggestions

Just make one. Or use your hands. A bad moose call made by you will be as good as any electronic call.

When they're in the mood a loud fart will do the trick. When they aren't in the mood, an electronic call won't help any more then cupped hands
A good reminder to ensure your rifles in working order before a hunt, a malfunction at a time like that you’d better pray he’s not too intent on finding the source of that call

Might be tough, but try and fine one of the fibreglass horns made by the late Owen Scott. They tend to be hard to find now, but they worked well and could take a beating.

Cut the bottom out of a Javex bottle will do in a pinch. It works well, especially,if it's pissin' down rain. I sure miss Owen. One of those characters you'd never forget. He was a good friend. He had a moose call air horn on his truck. He'd go through town and blow that thing,it was hillarious.

I’ve made a few over the years in a similar fashion using a traffic cone as a mold. I actually made one for a buddy a few weeks ago. This is my latest version with a string epoxied around. It makes it sound less tinny and gives it more rubbing action when scraping willows and alders.

yup mine looks similar although I didn't vacuum bag it to lay it up tight. I kinda slathered it onto my plug in an effort to get some bubbles and voids on purpose. It seems to make it sound more natural both making calls and raking brush or bark. In the final stage I layed in a pvc tube down the side so I could afix a rope and clip for carrying and clipping to my day pack. I could probably run over it with my quad and not destroy it LOL

I’m currently using one I made from a birch cone that has a piece of plastic slider rolled to a smaller diameter inside, taped together at the narrow (mouth) end. I left space between the two layers and get the resonance I’m looking for. It works great, is lightweight and easy to carry with a carrying cord attached. From reading the thread I’m assuming electric calls for moose are legal in other Provinces, I’m in Alberta where they aren’t.

Many years ago there were a group of hunters on the other side of the river from us. They only hunted a big marsh and had an Argo. They used the waxed string on a soup can as a call which gave off a weird sound or so we thought. They had some towers built in the marsh and called 24 hrs. a day but I would not go as far as to say they were carrying guns all night. They didn't bother us so we didn't bother them. The day we broke camp they did as well and they had a couple of moose and also helped us get our moose from the river to our trucks. One of the guys gave me one of their calls and I had it around for quite a while till a house move made it disappear with a lot of other stuff the wife probably thought was junk.
I never tried one but I guess they work.

I heard someone once had a moose come in to a chain saw that wouldn't start.

People actually use chainsaws to call moose in areas where there is currently logging, and you will hear the loggers talk about it. over time the moose realize that when they hear chainsaws there are very soon fresh young branches from the tops of trees (preferred food in late fall-winter) laying on the ground. the moose also realize that loggers don't care about them and so they come running in to the sound of chiansaws like a dinnerbell. I've heard of people going out to fresh cuts revving a chainsaw and within minutes had moose running straight for them looking for a snack. I guess you could say stihl entered the moose call market.

Natural voice is the way to go 100%! if you're looking to kill moose without knowing how to make a grunt or moan you'll have a much harder time with it. moose make lots of noise when moving through the bush so if you give a few calls while moving you can easily still hunt or stalk right up to one (provided good wind).

My son has brought two moose into our camp site in summer, with his damned snoring. Two separate occasions, once a bull, once a cow and calf. We were on islands both times, and the moose swam over. The bull passed within ten feet of his tent. It's not hard to call a moose.

Adult moose in a camp site at night is not fun BTW. But when the beagle woke up, she made short work of them with a few well placed howls.

I'm not great at calling either but I made one out of an old cardboard strike sign from my union and duct-taped it into a cone. Easily replaceable too, I got a stack of them when the office was downsizing and moving.

45ACPKING's fibreglassing of a cardboard cone sounds like a clever idea.

I've had moose come to chainsaws multiple times. Blocking trees, look up, bull standing at the treeline.

There is a lot of truth to that. It happens to me all the time here when getting firewood but its mule deer coming. A few minutes after the crash from the tree 3 or 4 deer come out maybe 20-30 feet away and start eating

Its talked about a lot in nova scotia too although i didnt see it first hand there.

The chainsaw thing is a fact was shown that years ago by some of my now passed mentors . Have seen it in real life many times cutting camp wood before the season opened.

Tomato juice can and a wet shoe lace.

Grizz

Funny story on those things. My dad was telling me one day his hunting buddies pulled a good prank in him. They all had a good laugh.
I guess my dad had call like this. And pissed on the string. All his friends who never saw a call like that had a competition to see who could make the best moose call. Dad sat back and smiled.
