45-70

I have owner up to seven 45-70 's at one time and have made thousands upon thousands of loads for everything from my Ruger #1 to my trapdoor with bullet from 300 to 525 grains in jacketed and cast, it is one of the easiest cartridges to load for and the brass can last almost forever.

I like using black powder in them. Even if 70 stands for grains by volume, it takes about 55-60 volume grains of the substitute. Nice mild recoil and cheap reloading. Also mild recipe for old rifle is available for the H4190 powder

I recently saw some Winchester 300 grain factory ammo at the Bass Pro here for $54.99 before taxes. That’s for 20 cartridges.
One could save considerable costs over factory by casting & reloading your own. The Hornady LeverEvolution 45-70 brass is about 1mm shorter that other 47-70 brass, truly insignificant.
