How do the various short action baseplates and box magazines differ for the various cartridges? Is there a way to tell what cartridge is was made for? To adapt a 308 to 223, if necessary?

A 308 will have the bottom of the action too large for a 223... a conversion to 223 would require a detachable magazine that holds the 223 rounds correctly.

The bolt face will be an indication of what is supposed to fit that action ...

Thanks. I didn't think the feed lips could possibly work for all short action cartridges.

The action started as a 308, which I chambered a barrel for and use it in an AICS chassis with appropriate aics magazine.

But I also chambered a barrel for 223 with a new bolt, of course, and also use it in the same AICS chassis, but with the aics 223 mag.

Just was wondering about if it might work with a hunting stock and blind mag. If I want to use the parts I have on hand, it would then only work as a 308 or derrivative (like 243 or 7mm-08).

So, I cannot simply buy a 223 blind magazine and hinged floor plate, and have it work with the 308 action? That trick, 308 to 223 only works because I am using an AICS magazine?

As guntech stated-

Other than the mag boxspring & follower selection, the receiver feed rails are machined per cartridge/case head diameter.
.378" bolt face receivers will NOT have said 1/2 football shape scallop in the RH upper corner of the ejection port in the rear receiver ring.
Some .473" bolt face receivers were barreled on .378" face receivers & will fail to eject said fired brass until said scallop is cut in the rear receiver ring.

Feed rail widths are proportionate in width & length for said cartridge in 17/222/223, 243,260,7mm08,308, RSAUM/WSM.

700L/A Ultra Mag rails are .030" wider than a magnum receivers feed rails.

Dan, have you had any experience with using a 223 BDL magazine assembly in a .308 action?

gun tech,
Yes,w/ feed rail modifications, reworked 22-250 forged follower, Win70 spring & w/o the rear spacer to feed heavies(80gr-90gr).

Action is a multi switch Bbl set-up.
