I have very accurate lh Ruger mk II in 7-08 and b&l 4x32mm balvar scope and longer 2.940" magazine.
Nice rig to hunt all available game in around Kamloops bc including 2 point moose if you can find them....
Last october I met suddenly highly agitated brown bear at 35 steps or so high in the mountains not 45 min from where I live.
At that moment being 69yo with big experience hunting all kinds of game I changed my mind about my gear.
I couldn't even bracket that standing bear in my scope having fov 24 ft at 100 yds so in emergency my only option would be to shoot that peashooter from hip!
Now I am on the lookout for straight 2.5 power scope with at least 50' fov at 100 yds
IMHO stopping power starts with 35 cal 250gr bullet at 2400fps or so.
Will the 358 Win give me that kind of performance in say 22" barrel and if so with what components?
Thank you for your input.

Are you suggesting you want to rebarrel what you've got to 358win if it'll get you the performance you desire?

Hodgdon lists a max velocity of 2278 out of a 26" barrel with 250gr partitions and varget. My Speer #12 lists 2333 with h335 out of a 22" barrel.

So 2400 sounds potentially doable with a hot load? But you probably won't know for sure until you try it, as every rifle is different and some can't even get to book max let alone over book max.

Yes, I am retired machinist and want to rebarrel my Ruger.
2400 fps would give me 200 yards zero impact point with 2.75" high at 100 yds 11" drop at 300yds and chance to hit the game at 250+ yds or so.

Ramshot TAC is your best friend for using the 358 to its full capability. You should be able to make 2400 with a 250 in a 2.9 inch box for sure

I love the 358 Win (mine is in a pre-81 BLR, and I just picked up a LH Rem 700 22" barrel in 358 that arrived today) and it has accounted for a number of elk (and moose and bears) over the years and I backed up my ol' hunting partner on his 7' grizzly with it (he used his Winchester 94 Big Bore in 356 Win). So I know that it will work for you!
It has been my back up guide rifle, archery, ATV and horseback rifle for almost 20 years now. My daughter also used it for her first big game animal (mule deer).
I have been using the 220 gr Speer Hot-Cor, that is only doing 2209 fps out of the 20" barrel on the BLR. I am looking forward to seeing how the new to me rifle performs with the same load!

If you do get 2400 fps with a 250 gr bullet out of a 22" barrel, then you will see a definite improvement in power over what I am getting! (apparently it is possible, but I do not have any data that lists that performance at this time, as most of the data I have is for 200, 220 and 225 gr bullets)
Regardless, the 358 works wonderfully on large game and you should be very happy with it!

Looks like my project is getting the legs.
I have the TAC, H4895 and RL 15 as well.
Used to have rechambered Rem 760 from 35Rem to 35 Whelen that shot my Hornady 250gr SP IL and 250 Noslers at almost 2600fps with RL15.
So far the best I found for 358 Win is from Hogdon 1999 recipe for unmentioned 250gr sp with 48gr blc2 for 2374 fps from 26" barrel.
Thank you all for your input.

....Wouldn't be nice in that kind of scenario to have the last resort of defence in form of my Ruger security six loaded heavily with 180gr Nos part on my belt like our US neighbours are able to do? Well with the commie regime now in power we can only dream on....
With that kind of assurance the 7mm-08 of mine with premium 160gr bullet would be acceptable hunting cartridge against anything walking in the woods.

I load for my 16” barrelled Ruger Hawkeye with 250 Hornady’s fueled with 40 grains of IMR 4198, not sure of speed but shoots flat enough to 200 yards and kills very effectively

A .350 Rem Mag would give you the performance you're looking for. It wouldn't be that difficult to open up the bolt face and extractor on a MK II Ruger.

Do it on a standard length action, load your cartridges longer than std coal, and it is no trick to get very close to 2650-2700 with 250 gr bullets.- dan

Ive got a couple .358 win rifles, a M77 and BLR,
I think 2250-2300 fps is more realistic speed for 250 gr weight,
I am at 2530 with a 225 gr Serria in a 22” barrel M77, really like this rifle. Nice long mag, so can seat bullets out much more, than a normal short action.
I found 3031 to be a very good powder. In the .358 win. At least with the 200 and 225 gr weight bullets,
