Glock 17 Gen 5 - Challenges

Sell your Glock and buy a PPQ or PDP... I shot a Glock 17 Gen 2 for YEARS, but never really felt great about it. I was MUCH more accurate with my Pre-B CZ75, but it wasn't suitable for competitions as mags were hard to come by and the external safety is a major distraction for me. I picked up a PPQ M1 Navy and loved it.

As I aged and my eyes started to fail me I moved back to a Glock 17 Gen 4 that was cut for an optic, and HATED IT. Figured out a Q5 Match slide would mate with my M1 Navy lower (I like the paddle release) and NEVER LOOKED BACK!
 
Pistols are a lot like shoes: one can still run in a pair of shoes a size smaller or larger, and Usain Bolt will outrun anyone on this board, shoes or not. But it is much more enjoyable to run in properly fitting footwear.

If you liked CZ Shadow, try Shadow 2.
 
All valuable insights. Thank you. If I cannot sell the glock for some reason, I guess I will just hold onto it for a rainy day or if my replacement is ever down. As I said Im still pretty new to shooting, i have maybe shot 1,000 rounds total. Half through mine and the rest in trying other things. My top 3 potentials and a p320 VTAC/RXP, sfp9/L/Match, and PPQ/PDP. I am going to see whats available at the range next time i go in and try my new drills on each and see whats best. I love the ergos on the hk, and ppq. The p320 i also liked and there are some very affordable ways to help personalize the unit. Id love a cz shadow 2, but they are mega cash. Down the road I will take a pretty hard look at acquiring one.

Good man, spend some time with whatever you can get your hands on.

Don't rule out the Shadow 2 (or something similar), it handles like none of the other options you're considering and might be worth the extra to you. You won't know until you shoot it. And good used deals come up on the EE.

Look into the Canik line of handguns, they are a hell of a lot of gun for the money. They have very nice features dollar for dollar, fantastic triggers and are very accurate and well thought out handguns. I’m a Glock guy to the core, but if I were looking to change for a competition gun that’s where I would be looking, the TP9SFX and the Elite Combat are damn nice, I have a couple of buddies running them in competition these days
 
If you are having better success shooting a different platform then perhaps its best to sell the Glock and select a platform that you enjoy more/ have better success with. Its a much better option that throwing $800 at a Glock in custom work just to find out that it does nothing to help the performance. And besides, if you do decide to turn around and sell it after having some custom work done, you will never get your money back out of it, good money after bad as the saying goes. Of all the pistols you mentioned that you were able to shoot well. There is nothing that the Glock does that they don't. I would suggest the P320 as it has the most modularity and the trigger pretty decent.
 
Well, I jumped on an opportunity to pickup a p320. Just waiting to pick it up. Pretty excited for it. Got an RXP XCarry with the Romeo R1 Pro. Only mod I am looking at is a Wilson Combat grip module or adding a tungsten weight to the Xgrip.

Good choice. You will really like the WC grip module. It makes a huge difference on how nicely that pistol fits into your hand.

Plastic glock sites are to be changed as they are garbage. But there is no need to mess with different heights.

Sounds like someone needs dry fire practice.

I put a heavier trigger in my glock to match my duty set up.

Bottom line is if you get good at shooting a glock you’ll be even better at shooting anything else. If you’re new to handgunning find someone to show you how to shoot.

I started out with a steyr and shot terribly, until I had a really good shooter give me some pointers.

Nice!!! I just ordered the WC grip yesterday from FOC, they are on sale for $30 off right now as well. Just looking to also find a place that has those tungsten inserts as well. Seems hard to 1: find them, 2: in stock, 3:willing to ship to canada, 4: able to ship to Canada, 5: in stock, in Canada


Also, what trigger you have in there?
 
Find a mentor to give you a hand. It’ll greatly help get you on the right path.

A fella came to my range last night, and was shooting poorly. I fixed his grip and explained what he was doing wrong, and it didn’t take long at all for his groups to shrink considerably, and to be more centered on the target.
 
I just did my basic handgun course at the local range, that was good experience. I have to spend some time now drilling drilling drilling to break these #### habits before they are ingrained

I was looking into doing some frame work by Blackbox Customs here in Calgary. They are able to do trigger guard undercuts, add some better stippling, thumb ledges (accelerator cuts) all of which should give a better purchase on the grip. However, I also found that Nomad Defense now makes a gen 5 frame that supposedly has a revised "different from stock" grip angle and would also incorporate all of the work I would be getting from Blackbox.

Curious if anyone has had a similar Glock experience and experience with these ND frames. I am also considering just selling it and getting something that works better for me out of the box.

If the grip angle on the optional frame matches that of the 1911, that may be the solution to your problem.

Some are more comfortable with 1911 grip angles.

Some, like me, are more comfortable with the flat mainspring housing than with the arched housing of the 1911A1.
 
Ohhh the love of pistol shooting !!!

I have 7 Glocks 17,19,20,21,22,26,44. I shoot them all very well except the Glock 22. For whatever reason I shot high left 99% of the time. I was never able to get past this until this year. I put my buddies Glock 22 barrel in my gun and it was bang on, no issues at all. I ordered a new factory barrel for it and the problem went away.

Have an experienced shooter take a few shots from your pistol. They will know if its you or the gun right away. While you could change out the sights, I would personally sell it and buy another one or something else. I refuse to keep any handguns that require the sights to be adjusted.
 
This thread cost me $100+. Thanks guys! I missed the $30 off but went with the WC grip/frame. I have the 320XFive 'and don't like the grip. It just doesn't work for me. The WC grip will be here later this week. I will be putting the XFive grip up for sale if the WC works as I expect it will.

To the OP you made the right decision to move on. As others have said going down the rabbit hole with mods for the Glock only costs you money if you are unhappy with the gun in the first place. Done that and it doesn't work.

Sorry for the late response. I honestly shoot the P320 better and the WC grip gives it a real 1911 feel. It is the most natural and comfortable pistol I have ever used. The S/S feels smaller and more compact over all. Both are a ton of fun to shoot and are pretty fast. The S/S has a better trigger but the P320 just feels and shoots better. If I were going to war I would be taking the 320 as I just shoot it better and there are some issues I am working through with my firing grip on the S/S.
