I despise the CQ/T -- but that just me, and anyone else trying to use it operationally - a lot of three gun shooters love them - and thats fine -- pick what you want it for and it can work.
The MR/T's are nice too - and work well at distance
I think the best poor mans setup is a Aimpoint and a Magnifier. You can remove it when you dont need it -
CQ/T with a whopping battery life of 7 hours, an overall length of 8.8 inches and weighing in at 17.6 ounces. Compared to an EOTech 552 which comes in at 5.1 inches long weighing in at 11 ounces and sporting a battery life of 600-1100 hours. For two optics that fulfill the same role, the EOTech has a serious advantage. The EOTech has no magnification but the addition of a 3x puts the entire setup just over 18 ounces and about $80 more than the Leupold. The EOTech sports unlimited eye relief, the CQ/T has 2-2.8 inches.

I quite agree that the eye relief of the CQT is a definite shortcoming, but the battery life seems a non issue to me given the fact I would rarely use the illuminated reticle. Even if it did crap out on you, its possible to switch to the plain black reticle.
OTOH, I suppose I won't be pulling a whole lot of sentry duty at dusk during a rifle match ...

How true. The availability of a reticle without the use of batteries is nice. Although if my EOTech craps out I go to irons. Personally I don't like the size of the CQ/T. They're awfully big and heavy for what they are. The battery life is more of a pet peeve. I would really like to know why the life is so short when compared to similar optics??

No targets to set up or score to keep! Lots of adrenalin and motivation to spare .... it sounds as if that scenario might have some advantages.
And if by chance the CQT isn't up to snuff I could always pull out another rifle.
I was also considering mounting a red dot sight on a side rail as an additional 'up close and personal' option. Just for the sport of it you understand ...
I actually like the NF 1-4 alot myself. While it's illumination is not bright enough for daytime, it seems to be very workable at any other time. I use it like an ACOG - I don't fiddle with the windage.
I like the S&B alot, but it's cross hair is not illuminated. Also, I find that the dot is so bright that it is too bright for indoor, and there is no intermediate settings between being "very bright" and "very very very dim". The S&B is also more capable of precision shot because of the cross hair.
I was thinking about keeping just the S&B, but now I decide to keep both NF and S&B as they seem to fulfill different tasks.

Aimpoint 3x w ring 0.79Not as heavy as you think, and much lighter (and cheaper!) than the aimpoint / 3x combo once rings are considered.
Regarding battery life, the 7 hours often quoted was at max intensity (other sights quote life for medium intensity) and was correct only for the early models. Certainly the one I owned never used up a set of batteries. Current life is 600 hours at medium setting from a standard AA, longer for lithium. By comparison, the S&B's battery life is rated at 100 hours for similar settings.
THe CQ/T's aren't perfect (reticles washing-out in sunlight - like almost all other variable 'tactical' scopes, short eye relief, and some other niggles) but they aren't crap either - at least for match use.

The S&B will last WAY more than the 250 hours its quoted on max life setting (which is brighter than an EO or Aimpoint)
Most S&B users will go to their IR laser in hours of dusk --however as GT noted it really does not have a "less bright" setting -- two solutions -- use the NV setting with a set of Insight 50-50 or Litton 793's -- or crank the magnifiaction to 4x - it will give one a faint dot (larger dot - but still usable).

It would appear that SOCOM Supply has them on there web site for about half the cost of a S&B. Who has one??
