BC trades away outdoor recreation rights to continue industrial encroachment

Just finished reading the summary of the court decision that has instigated this tentative agreement. I think what the BC government is doing unbelievably counter productive for everyone involved except for themselves of course.

The infringement on the FN territory by industrial interests will continue but everyone else gets shut out. I can see that this will disrupt science based conservation in the area, and will only foster more animosity between FN and non FN.

This will also set a bad precedent for other regions in the province.

I have written my local MLA who just happens to be NDP. We will see what kind of form letter I get back.

the bigger question is what is the access restrictions going to look like? Roads? Rivers? Air?

the other alternative is to quit hunting

a 3rd alternative which sports men and women in this province seem to have no will or ability to get behind the BC conservative party or start a new one.
A fail to act .... like right now..... means no one can complain when all us indigenous folks are the only ones that can hunt and fish in this province.

This is very much the truth.

This is one of the largest threats we have collectively faced.
Get on board or get the hell out of the way.
If you don't care enough to get involved now, hang up your guns, you won't soon be needing them.

Then follow up with a pointed but polite letter to your MLA, cc'd to Horgan ( premier@gov.bc.ca ) Katrine Conroy ( FLNR.Minister@gov.bc.ca ) Mike Farnworth (PSSG.Minister@gov.bc.ca )

Go even one better and MAIL a copy to each. Goes a hell of a lot further than an email which any staffer can and will toss.

My presentation to the Alberni Fish & Game Club went very well. Better than I had hoped for.
I will be sending along more information to them shortly, and helping design a template letter.
They are taking this matter to the Region One BCWF meeting soon as an urgent matter of discussion and action.

I would like to suggest that any who can attend the local BC Fish & Game Club meetings in your Community, and enlighten them on developments in this regard. If you need, I can and will provide a copy of what I presented last night.

Given the political atmosphere that is predominant in this community, it was a pleasant surprise.

I very much hope others will follow suit and inform their local clubs of what is occurring here...

Their form of "consultation" is now up and running.

This is nothing but the government using us as pawns and selling us out in order to continue, and actually escalate the industrial environmental damage being done in this area. Note there is zero mention of the increase in industrial permits these actions have and will allow going down the road, simply a focus on us - the low hanging fruit as it were. Also note than when the Province walked away with the related tentative agreement in hand, they immediately granted 193 more Industrial Permits within the area in question.

Hunting was not even mentioned in the court's proceedings and findings whatsoever.

Not acceptable.

Wow, pretty strong words for a thread that was only 5 days old when you posted. I think the real problem is this story isn't getting enough exposure elsewhere. Not always easy to find these stories buried in 100'S of others on this site. I just heard about it this morning from a hunting buddy. Maybe try passing it on to others by way of social media networking etc and sports/hunting stores should be heavily involved as well.

I don't believe there is a single Hunting Forum in BC this has not been posted on.
Also posted on numerous Fishing Forums.
And numerous Facebook pages.

Now we are trying to engage as many local Fish & Game Clubs as we possibly can.

Good advice regarding the stores. I will look into that asap.

Beyond that, how else to get the message out?
We REALLY need Numbers this time around!

Unfortunately some people like me don't do Facebook and don't frequent other gun or fishing forums. No worries, it appears to be gathering steam now, I will log into the government site and put in my two bits worth. Haven't heard anything from my local club which should be all over this as the hunting area in question directly affects the membership here.

Agreed. NDP or Liberal parties in this province are virtually the same. Need new blood in Victoria.
