Im sure this has been asked a million times but as someone new to guns its all so foreign to me.
Looking for a 12ga for home defense as well as when hunting bears for slugs, and water fowl. Semi auto. Id want to have different barrels. 1 slug, 1 variable choke and maybe another one?
As cheap and used as possible. Was told to look at a Stoeger M35? Any other ideas or things to looks for?

Does it need to be Semi as that will add significant cost

lost of very good pump guns for about 1/2 the price

For a semi auto slug gun make sure its a fixed barrel not a long action recoil gun.
While not perfectly suited to your request the a303 semi auto works great. They can be found reasonably priced with wear and use. Theyre all magnum guns but the barrel limits shell length. I have one with 2 barrels. 2.75" and the other is 3" both fixed mod choke. Both pattern slugs well. I use it for my main waterfowl gun in 3" i added the 2.75" barrel for shooting light skeet loads.
You could source an extra barrel and cut to your desired legal length for slugs and hd. Keep a barrel of 26 to 30" for waterfowl
The beretta a300/301/302/303 series interchange. Some have choke tubes some are fixed

I hope you realize that you can shoot (cheap) Foster style slugs in a plain barrel, even with chokes. So you could get by with one barrel, in which case you can spend the same amount on a better shotgun. If you can get your hands on a used Baikal MP-153 or 155 for +/- 400$, you would be doing very well.

Pardon me for this, but newbies. You're so new to guns that it is all so foreign to you, yet you're immediately intending to go bear hunting, waterfowl hunting, and prepping for home defense.

What experience do you have with firearms and with hunting?

Lol no I didnt know that. I know nothing of shottys. Only bows. Are there any known guns to stay away from? Im thinking I want it to go up to 3.5" so I can shoot anything type idea and also the different chokes.

Lol none but I just want "something". Us Canadians cant even really use them for self protection so if I have something big and black with a barrel I figure its already half way there. But I kinda want it to be able to do whatever in the future without it being a specific gun to say water fowl at 32" barrel.

I dont actually want to go bear hunting with it. I just want it now as a backup for my bow hunting as im sizing that up. But I want it to be able to do anything in future including waterfowl and defense.

Shooting since I was 10 but in terms of variety of guns I dont have much sadly.

Most semis come standard with a 28 inch barrel, some with a 26 inch. Dont bother with 3.5 inch capability, shells are expensive and just hurt your shoulder. Think Weatherby SA-08 and Baikal MP 153 or MP 155 for cheap reliable guns. There is a flood of Turkish guns on the market these days, some good, some (most) not so good. I wouldnt roll the dice ...

I'd go pump for an all rounder shotgun. Cheaping out on a semi, especially a "do all", could result in ending up hunting with or protecting your life with a jam-o-matic single shot.

Simplest answer is a pump gun with a 28" barrel, removeable chokes and 3" chamber. Find a used Remington 870, Winchester or Mossberg 500. Really, the best thing to do is simply get in the game, start using it, and do research/reading at your convenience. After a few years and several hundred rounds you will start to figure out what you like/don't like.

No need for 3.5". No need for three barrels at this stage.

Good to know that I dont have to worry about 3.5 What are they primarily used for? Stopping really big angry animals like hippos or something? Ill definitely look into tho. Anything to know in regards to gas semis vs inertia?

A Professional guide mentioned going semi because the last thing you want is to do, is to worry about pumping when a bear is charging you.

Since bear defence seems to be your fixation, buy a pump. When the chips are down, a pump is more reliable than a semi. I dont think you have to worry about the cycling speed of a pump, you will be motivated.
