I have had this gun two years now and never fired it. It was bought strictly as a defender gun to serve the purpose of home and travel defense. I grabbed it this morning to give it a cleaning as it tends to get a bit dusty over time where it's stored and it's the first time I really got looking closely at it. In particular the funky bolt. None of my Wingmasters years ago had a bolt design like it. It has a plastic sleeve that is spring loaded you can slide ahead. I am trying to figure out what purpose it actually serves? Dust or debris shield? When you slide it ahead you can clearly see the rear of the firing pin protruding about 1/4" from the rear of the bolt and it too looks much different than I recall on the older Wingmasters I owned(late 70's vintage). Also I don't recall my Wingmasters having a screw in the bolt located beneath the extractor? Maybe they did but it's been that many years I don't recall it. But the biggest thought I have is how durable will the plastic sleeve be over time? Will oil and cleaning solvents cause it to break down eventually or even how durable is it going to be if the gun saw some repeated regular use at the range? I can picture that plastic sleeve becoming dislodged and jammed up in the action. Anybody with experience with this style bolt on their 870's have any real use input? Seems like a real oddball bolt design to me.
