Within a number of threads I have seen mixed answers for the question below:

“Are there issues feeding/extracting cheap non match grade ammo into a match grade MTR chamber”

I am curious what everyone’s experience is.

-have you been able to run CCI Blazer ammo in your MTR
-what sort of accuracy do you get with cheaper ammo in an MTR (does it shoot cheap stuff better than a non match grade)
-how much more accurate is the MTR chamber compared to a non MTR chamber at 100+ yards

I’m debating buying a Pro Varmint (does not have a match grade chamber) because I am worried that I will have issues shooting my cheaper ammo through a MTR. I’d like to shoot expensive stuff during matches or when shooting for groups but when I just want to go to the range and put volume down range (positional practice, taking friends, shooting less than 100 yards) I’d like to be able to run cheaper ammo.

I take pride in finding 22's that shoot "cheap" ammo accurately. I own in the neighborhood of 10 "precision capable" 22's. Four are CZ. One is the 457 MTR Varmint. I haven't tested it as much as I'd prefer yet but It does not shoot cheaper ammo especially well. Compared to my "plain" 455 stainless it's on par or slightly less accurate. I haven't tried any high velocity CCI stuff but it chambers everything else. One type it got great groups with is CCI Standard Velocity. Under 1/2" at 50 yards.

This spring/summer I intend to put it through a lot more.
 
No issues with chambering or closing the bolt on cheap stuff?

I had no trouble chambering CCI SV and greentag in my MTR, but had lots of trouble extracting a dud CCI SV round. Nearly had to mortar the rifle, as I didn't bring the right cleaning rod with me and I was the only one at the range.
I stopped running CCI ammo through it after that. It seems to have zero issues with SK, Eley and Lapua ammo, whereas my Kidd-barreled 10/22 does well with CCI, Blazer etc.
 
Good to know - maybe the MTR is the way to go then.
I wish there was more info out there, don’t want to spend $1000 on a rifle and be limited to shooting $18/100 rounds of match grade ammo.

Part of the 22 fun for me is being able to shoot frequently and in volume.
Love the trips to the range where I can go shoot 200 rounds of my Blazer ammo for a whopping $16

The main difference between the CZ "match" and CZ "regular" chambers (in bolt action rifles) is one of length. That is to say, the match chamber is a bit shorter.

Since it's a little shorter, more varieties of ammo may experience some engraving when the round is completely chambered when the bolt is closed.

Some makes of .22LR ammo are somewhat different in terms of dimensions. Usually, inexpensive bulk .22LR ammo will have much more variation in all dimensions -- overall length, bullet diameter etc. -- .22LR match ammo will be more consistent dimensionally. Additionally, ammo such as CCI SV has a wider driving band that makes the bullet engage the rifling earlier as the bolt closes than many other ammos. This is why CCI SV can be hard to chamber in a match rifle.

As far as accuracy goes, the MTR match chamber may help improve accuracy with good ammo, but cheap bulk ammo is not made into accurate ammo simply by shooting it through a match chamber. What's more important than the chamber is the quality of the bore. CZ barrels are mass produced and some may be better than average, some worse.

Both the barrel and ammo must be good to achieve good accuracy, regardless of the chamber.
 
i tried a lot of match and non match ammo, the one that always give me the best result in my mtr is the sk standard plus.
 
I recall a rifle that was reamed with a Eley Match Chamber and it would not chamber CenterX as the rim was too thick.
He claimed the rim thickness was in the 0.043" range.
The only Lapua I have is Polar Biathlon and five rounds measured 0.040 - 0.041.

My Remington has an Eley Match Chamber and have used Eley Match grade exclusively.
I don't recall ever trying other Match Ammo in this rifle and that won't happen in the house.

Both Coopers are also fed Match ammo and on occasion the empty will not extract.

When I hear "My rifle loves Blazer", it is pretty well a for gone conclusion the love affair ends on game day!
 
My 457 match chamber the CCI but doesn’t group well at 50 yards about 1”, but my main concern is does not fully seats on my mags, occasionally it will not release and got stuck in the mags, it must be a little long, so continue shooting the SK+, very very accurate
 
Thanks for the replies - looks like if I plan to get an MTR I also need to plan to buy SK+ or equivalent priced ammo to feed through it.

I bet it will like SK rifle match or SK long range match, those 2x are used by lots of CZ shooters in the rimfire PRS world. And a bonus, they aren't that expensive compared to other 'match' ammo.
 
My MTR also shoots the CCI SV well. I have determined that to be my go to cheaper priced ammo. Federal bulk chambers fine but has flyers to be expected. The worst I tried as far as chambering goes was the Hornady. It was brutal. I really like the gun.
 
Watched more videos and it seems that CCi will chamber and extract in the MTR.
Curious how well the Blazer ammo works in it (both extraction and shooting).
 
Good Better Best.

Good for gophers is a matter of testing high velocity ammo and accept a few misses . . . Blazer and Thunderbolt.
Better suggests a few less misses . . . MiniMags ( RN or HP). My son uses CCI SV. American made ammo where the lot that works today may not be available tomorrow.
Best is for serious competition . . . Takes a lots of testing and you want to be able to buy a case after all the tests are complete.

Life is too short to shoot cheap ammo hoping for match results . . . life is too short to dance with . . . but that is another matter.
 
Bring a strong cleaning rod with you if you decide to feed CCI and Blazer ammo to a MTR. And maybe a rubber mallet. In case something happens that forces you to extract a live CCI round for some reason.
This is first hand experience speaking, as a MTR owner who had bruised palms after trying to eject a live CCI greentag round that misfired. I didn't believe the internet posts that told me to avoid CCI ammo in my MTR, but I sure do now.

Very Interesting, I will have to note to avoid that. The SV seems to shoot well in mine. What is your preferred ammo?
 
My MTR will hit the 1/2" challenge with my lots of SK rifle match and Center X. Haven't done a ton of longer range testing, as the winds at Milo are often howling, but the CX will post consistent groups just under an inch at 100m and under 3" at 200 (very few groups at 200, due to wind, so it could be better or worse). Eley match is decent, but the lot I have isn't as consistent as my CX or RM. My rifle didn't like my 2 lots of tenex or the single lot of rws r50 I managed to find.
Hoping that more ammo comes available so that I can do some lot testing, as what I have is too limited to make any solid conclusions. My MTR absolutely didn't do well with CCI SV and greentag was just OK. But the 10/22 likes both, so I'm happy.
