SKS reassembly issues

I recently received a nice refurbed SKS. I stripped it down for a good cleaning, but am having some issues after reassembly. Specifically, it no longer fires with the mag closed. Open the mag and it fires expected. Any thoughts as to what might be going on?

The magazine catch shares a spring with the sear and they both slide back and forth in the same grooves, might be a bit of debris in there clogging it up

Hope that helps,
Jake

Thanks Jake. Looks like that’s the issue. As far as I can tell the mag release is getting hung up and interfering with the sear.

Should I take a file to remove that lip that it’s getting stuck on?

The catch button should bottom out on there. That would do the trick in a few passes, if you're careful it won't hurt the value, it's a well hidden wear point and removing burrs is standard practice.

Normally there is a bit of play in the cover, if you can fully seat it the issue should go away without having to pull out any tools but I wouldn't hesitate to spend a minute on it with the file either if it bothers you.

Cheers,
Jake

Sounds like the magazine might be improperly seated.

There is a U-shaped notch on the rear of the magazine. The crosspin on the forward end of the trigger assembly secures the shape lug from underneath.

If the mag is improperly seated the trigger assembly crosspin will set above the u-shaped notch instead of below it where it needs to be.

Thanks everyone! After troubleshooting and double checking placement of all parts with a friend, we decided to proceed with deburring as we still thought that to be the primary issue. I removed a very small amount of material and now everything is functioning as expected.

Put the mag in first .... the the trigger group, next ...you will know you have it right, when you press the mag release and just the bottom ( external shell ) of the mag will swing open , but the mag is still attached to the rifle. If the mag ( all of it ) fall out on the ground after pressing the mag release... then it’s not in right.
Cheers
