Are you legally allowed to keep a shotgun in your vehicle, or is it only allowed in a vehicle for transportation?

If so, do many of you indulge? And if you do, is it a full size shotgun, or more a tactical rig (shorter barrel, pistol grip, etc.)

i was actually contemplating this today aswell, cause you can travel with it, soooo technically you could keep it in there and just say your on the way to the range

So you mean lie? No can do. Find out the rules. Live by the rules.

for unrestricted there is no law that says "you must be on your way to shoot your gun to have it in the car with you", so keeping one in the car is a non issue as long as you obey all the transportation rules.

restricted is a different story

It's concerning that PAL holders don't even know the basic rules. Go to the CFC web site, everything is you need to know is there.

i don't transport non-restricted, so I couldn't remember off the top of my head.

Thanks for your condescending input though.

It's not really the best environment to leave a gun stored in, with the humidity and constant freezing and thawing. I do leave a couple boxes of shells in the truck all the time (which the cops LOVE), but the shotgun gets enough respect to make it back to the house every time!

what exactly are the rules?
Here exactly are the rules. Pay attention to the AND's and OR's and what it DOESN'T say:
TRANSPORTATION OF NON-RESTRICTED FIREARMS

10. (1) An individual may transport a non-restricted firearm only if

(a) except in the case of a muzzle-loading firearm that is being transported between hunting sites, it is unloaded; and

(b) in the case of a muzzle-loading firearm that is being transported between hunting sites, its firing cap or flint is removed.

(2) Subject to subsection (3), an individual may transport a non-restricted firearm in an unattended vehicle only if

(a) when the vehicle is equipped with a trunk or similar compartment that can be securely locked, the non-restricted firearm is in that trunk or compartment and the trunk or compartment is securely locked; and

(b) when the vehicle is not equipped with a trunk or similar compartment that can be securely locked, the non-restricted firearm is not visible from outside the vehicle and the vehicle, or the part that contains the non-restricted firearm, is securely locked.

(3) If, in a remote wilderness area that is not subject to any visible or otherwise reasonably ascertainable use incompatible with hunting, an individual is transporting a non-restricted firearm in an unattended vehicle that is not equipped with a trunk or similar compartment that can be securely locked, and the vehicle or the part of it that contains the non-restricted firearm cannot be securely locked, the individual shall ensure that the non-restricted firearm

(a) is not visible; and

(b) is rendered inoperable by a secure locking device, unless the individual reasonably requires the non-restricted firearm for the control of predators.

I have been asked what the shells were for, where I got them from etc, etc. I just keep the answers simple, they are for a 12 gauge shotgun, officer, I got them at Canadian Tire, officer etc, etc.

A range bag is much more responsible than my approach, which is tucking them under the bench seat in the Ford truck.

if i ever find a completely stainless shotgun, or move down south, ill leave one in my trunk :)
as it stands, it would rust in mine after the first day. i have yet to own a car with a trunk that is completely moisture-free in winter.

speaking of which, why *dont* they make stainless shotguns? the only weatherproof ones ive seen are electroless nickel plated. why dont they make them stainless? id buy a stainless 870 tomorrow if they had them.
is electroless better? doesnt it just wear off? enlighten me please :)

I believe that if you wish to store a shotgun in your car you must follow storage rules, not transport rules. Personally, I plan to do it with a Dominion mag fed shotgun. Trigger locked ammo seperate, or locked case ammo seperate will be the way i go.
