Polishing the whole bolt carrier with a dremel, should not take longer than 10 minutes.

So, to remove the carry handle I either punch out the pin holding the carry handle to the attachment block, or I drill out this rivet to take the whole carry handle block off. Is that correct?
Does the flat head screw even do anything

I'm very happy with the way this turned out, it feels super snug. If there's any interest from the community then maybe I'll make kits.

Count me in for one of those, I have a knockoff zenitco handle coming but I hadn't yet figured out how I was going to attach it to the rifle.

I designed and 3d printed clamshell to be used with one of those airsoft AK Zenitco charging handles. I bored it out to just a bit larger than the end nub diameter of the Type 81 charging handle so it would slip over. The handle comes with a 5mm and 3mm M3 grub screw but they're either too long or too short. I'll swap it out for a 4mm so it sits flush (it's sitting proud in the picture).

I did similar to this but more lazy
I dremeled out the inner diameter of the airsoft charging handle, then instead of a 3d printed shell I simply wrapped duct tape around the bolt carrier's charging handle until the duct tape was level with the raised edge
then I hammered on the airsoft charging handle and the included short set screw fit good
its a bit wonky but its good for me

Not sure why they went 50/50 screw and rivet either.

I think the designers were backed into a corner. Needed at least 2 points of contact, and on the only available points, one area was too thin for a screw, and the other area would have had to have been drilled through in order to back a rivet. So they went with the appropriate fastener for each location.

With the gun ban pushed to October 2023, the type 81 will be the semi of choice in Canada. Unbeatable at the current price point and I hope accessories will become more available.

Is that guy still building the no drill scope mount/dovetail to sell to people? Want to buy it…rifle useless without a good optic. TI conveniently oversold their pic mount inventory…

Good news, everyone!

The handguards are currently being tested and have succeeded quite well. The dot has held zero over a few hundred rounds now, as well as some intentional drops.

It doesn't heat up badly despite being aluminum, never needed to take my hand off the handguard.

There's other things to cover before release but expect to be able to find one yourself soon.

Pictured as well are my other projects in to this rifle, anyone interested in those?

That's pretty cool. What's the ETA to market? And what's that blue thing? Mag release?

So that bolt catch release lever is a bolt on, right?
It looks like it interfaces with the internal bolt hold-open via the pin that extends down past the side of the magazine catch housing.
Your lever looks like it sets the bolt catch by pressing down, and releases it by pushing up.
As someone who has designed a bolt catch release lever for the SKS with similar functionality, I know what a game changer the bolt catch lever can be, and how weird it feels going back to a rifle that doesn't have one!
I will be following this development closely

I'm interested in all of it. If that blue thing is a bolt release I'll take three.

Looking good. Have you looked into getting the picatinny rail surface as low as possible? It would be very useful for mounting a tape switch without blocking the iron sights.

Is the upper piston cover able to be used by itself? I would be interested in one, mostly to mount a light so holding zero isn't an issue.

And what about future extended lower handguards? Something like this would look great on our long barreled rifles. Circumcised handguards save on weight, but I always like the longer ones because it keeps you from accidentally burning yourself on a hot barrel and you can rest it on something instead of directly putting pressure on the barrel (I know they're not free floated, but it's still better than direct barrel pressure).
