After going with an online hunter education course last year at a price point that the long standing cadre of hunter instructors cant compete with, OFAH drove another nail in the coffin tonight by telling the instructors they have to find their own liability insurance effective immediately.

Instructor liability insurance had been covered by the OFAH through the membership program, which requires that all Hunter Education Instructors must carry liability insurance of (2) million dollars for bodily injury; property damage; and professional liability. Instructors are required to provide proof of their insurance coverage to the Ontario Hunter Education Program (OHEP) via the Hunter Education Program Manager, on an annual basis.

In the email sent out this afternoon, previous insurance coverage has been dropped as a result of the OFAH obtaining a new insurance carrier, and in their words: "is partially due to changes within the insurance industry, but also because of the way the hunter education program has evolved;primarily how teaching for many instructors has become a commercial venture". Note that OFAH retains all of the revenue from the online Hunter Education Course......

"If you are an instructor who is operating independently or operating as a registered business, (meaning you are charging a fee for your services rendered and are profiting from it), you will need to secure additional insurance coverage. This is deemed a commercial venture under the insurance program and requires specific commercial general liability insurance coverage to ensure adequate coverage."

So instead of sourcing a carrier, they set all of the instructors adrift to independently find their own insurance carriers. Recently I posted on here for someone looking for commercial insurance for guiding to be wary of the OFAH coverage. Now the words have bitten me.

So if anyone out there knows where we can find a reasonable group rate for commercial insurance as instructors, I would appreciate it.

sorry to hear

If I were you (or a HEP inst) I would be getting in touch with the rest of the group and contacting a broker to see if they were interested in some new business.
It has to be pretty risk free....classroom and all that.

No ammo, no live fire drill, what can go wrong?

How about contacting the Canadian Shooting Sports Association to see if they can help. My local club requires you to purchase a membership for the insurance.

My thoughts exactly, the Firearm Organizations have access to "Liability Insurance" when you join. Either comes with the price of the membership or can be added on. I have "Insurance" through NFA/CSSA/CCFR.

Ever firearm owner should have this as well as a FRO membership.

Let me re-phrase…. Why would/should Ontario’s largest non profit conservation organization expend more time and funds to help a private business profit?

Convenient way for the OFAH to funnel more revenue their way by trying to eliminate some competition.
One would think that they would encourage in class courses over online and spreading a bit of extra expense in their insurance cost for a few instructors out over the whole membership would not be a big deal.

When I did my course we had two people out of my class fail. One for repeatedly sticking his booger hook in the trigger guard and one for doing a muzzle sweep towards the instructor.
Hope online courses are not going to have situations like this slip through but am afraid it will..

AGM in my zone is on March 27th.

Because OFAH charges people a membership, so technically you pay for it. Similar to what CCSA does. I hope their membership dropped in price because of it, if not everyone should contact them about it.

Afaik only the ohep was offered online and there is no firearm handling or training as part of the ohep.

PAL instruction and a legal right to possess firearms. - dan

Aren’t we talking about hunter safety corse? How does a PAL apply to that? When I did mine they were separate. Please explain my benefit again?

If they are now one in the same and you can do it online cheaper then what exactly are the benefits other than a lighter pocket?

I don’t understand your point. They charge non business for a membership and give insurance so business for profit should get a free ride? Insurance to drive your car is one price for a individual but if you wanna ride share/taxi it’s different. Same thing here.

After teaching the Hunter Ed for 20 years without insurance , the Min. of Natural Resourses said ( in the Spring)
of 2003 , get insurance or we will cancel your qualifications. I said ,,,,, "I will not give a course till the Fall & get insurance
then or retire. " Two weeks latter they cancelled my qualifcations, without warning. NICE GUYS!!!!
