.223 semi for coyote hunting

Is there anything in the 1000$ish budget range?

Not much in that price range except a used T97 or WK180-C. Or perhaps spend a little more and pick up a used Benelli MR1? They don't seem to retain good resale value despite being a rock solid dependable firearm. $1400 - $1500 should get you one. Don't expect bolt action accuracy with the Benelli but they are perfectly capable of 200 yard and under coyote accuracy, which is what most coyotes are taken at anyways.

I think this is your most economical option with a reasonable expectation of "enough" accuracy and reliability for the job. They also use AR magazines, which is nice.

If you're open to other chamberings, you might also luck into a used Browning BAR in a usable caliber around that price range. Or possibly a used Remington 740/7400/742 or Winchester 100 for much cheaper, but these can have spotty accuracy and reliability issues. (but honestly, all of these options can)

Had a Benelli and loved it - except when having to disassemble to clean. Then it was a bugger - plain and simple. Otherwise, it was a laser-gun shooter.

- I'm pretty sure a scope mount and a spare magazine can still be had for under $1k :p

I don't know. .223 just doesn't have the same oomph power that .45 brings to the table. Especially when you're going after coyotes in bear country, there's nothing like having that reliable knockdown punch that .45 brings to the table.

And let's not even get into .45 having a much more dominant trajectory than those annoyingly flat-shooting .223 rounds. Same principle as the Javelin missile really, and how effective it is against tanks. Imo, top down kills are something that's really only made possible by using Javelin missiles and .45. And no one is going after coyotes with Javelin missiles (obviously).

What groups would you expect with a T97 G3 say with PMC style ammo and 6-9x scope? Not sure if Island Hunter was using irons or red dot when he says 1.5 moa and what type of ammo (match)?

Try a Browning BAR in.243 shoot a 55 or 58gr bullet. It will be much better suited to hunting coyotes….if it’s a faster follow up shot you could also try and rem 7600 pump or a BLR Lever action. Unfortunately not many good semi auto hunting platforms available for us coyote hunters. Something to consider for coyote hunting one well fired bullet is always better than many poorly fired bullets. Honestly you might want to take a look at a short, quick handling, short action bolt gun they are generally just more reliable and more accurate. Maybe something like the Howa mini action? A true short action bolt gun with some practice and shoot quite quickly.
