hi all and happy new year, i was debating wether i should bring this up so here it goes, last fall me and some army buddies and a new fella who has never gone on a deer hunt came along, we drove through the hills of white court and didnt even see one deer, some of the local hunters said a bad snow fall the previous winter killed many, and so the numbers were down,
so after hearing this i thought i would go to the sporting good store in whitecourt and buy a couple of boxes of shells in exchange for some advise as to where to find the best local areas for hunting. instead what i got from a buystander was a very rude remark about how every one comes up and kills all "his deer" so fine i walked away to the other side of the store and the individule and his friend start joking about the incident with the store staff probably assuming i wasnt paying attention didnt feel very welcome and not a good taste for a friend's first hunting experience, i understand the store staff want to keep all there paying customers happy however should have remaind at least neutral and if anything i would think the reason his store is open is to get buisness from all the people who come up there to hunt, so if any of the individules involved are on this site i say to you, you will never get my buissnes again i will give it to P&D or wholesale, and that land is crown land and so i will continue to come up there and shoot your "deer" in fact i did finally get a buck and a doe, this is in no way a slag to white court or the people there the last 3 years i have been up there every one has been very nice just this one incident and a few individules

What an arse. Unfortunatley they are everywhere. As you said, you can't brand the village due to the actions of the idiot.

Here's hoping that one of HIS deer steps out in front of HIS truck, while he is on his was to HIS store.

Good shooting, enjoy the steaks!!

Hakx - another CF guy

Yes they are everywhere. I had a run in with a guy that was trying to sell me the wrong ammo for my gun. I guess he thought he was being funny or I didnt know what I was talking about. I was so glad to bring in my pics of me kill and post them on his "kill board" he had in the store. Shut him up.

Guys that that get whats coming to them in the end. Bad karma will follow him around

Sounds familiar...

It isn't HIS deer until he gets HIS tag, gets HIS butt out into the bush & actually kills it. THEN & ONLY then is it HIS deer.

What a LOSER!

If he want's to own animals, he should run a farm. Wild deer aren't owned by any person when out wandering the hills.

Just remember, there's a jerk in every town. Many of em have jobs behind the counter at gun stores (fortunately there are some VERY good guys behind those counters too, to offset the misogynistic or xenophobic ones).

I would of had a hard time holding my tounge too!!
Being from Fox Creek (just down the road) I know just what you're talking about. Someone stated earlier.. to paste YOUR kill on THEIR kill board. I've done it before (not in WC) but now I will take my Fox Creek moose pics and post them on HIS board :D:D

I was filling up in Cremona and had an old hillbilly come over and strike up a conversation. When I asked if he knew of any close places where I might fill a tag(this was in june by the way) he said he knew of plenty of places but he didn't want his deer getting shot. I tried to put him at ease by saying:

"Don't worry about me shooting your deer, I only shoot the big ones!"

He just about pissed himself laughing but he still didn't tell me of any places?

jcbruno,

I can understand your frustration in regards to your encounter with the "my deer" dude, particularly when you have a buddy, new to hunting, witness the attitude. Let it be known, not all hunters from Whitecourt are like that, nor support indignant dialogue. I do know the gents at the sport store you speak of and they are not the type to degrade customers.

I think we've all experienced the self-proclaimed experts, whom aren't really there to shop, but to yap. It's inevitable, just like a beauty-salon. You got a point, though, that proprietors should stay neutral.

Anyways, congrats on your buck and doe harvest, and here's hoping all your future adventures around Whitecourt are positive.

Well we know you are "mature"... :jerkit:

Sadly this phenomena is more universal than you would think. In the past couple of months I had the opportunity to hunt several tracts of private and Crown Land that I used to hunt years ago in Muskoka, Ontario, a few hours north of Toronto. While I expected that odd cottage owner from the big city to wish I was not there and perhaps express their displeasure should they have seen me walking down a road with a shotgun, I was most surprised at the reactions of a few of the other hunters that I'd met. One hunter tried to tell me that it was illegal to hunt in the area I was in on Sunday, despite it being fully legal and the fact that as a local he surely would have known the truth. He even spoke of how he had a camera in the woods that filmed a few hunters there on another Sunday, kind of implying that we were being watched and intruding on his hunting space. During my second encounter with a hunter (or quite probably a poacher?) he tried to tell me that the area that I was hunting was all private land, despite the fact that we were at the intersection of a road with a railway that lead into several thousand acres of Crown Land. He obviously thought that we were a couple of gullible city people but completely changed his tune and became far friendlier when I said a few things that subtly gave away that I knew that he was lying.

This kind of greedy behaviour is most unbecoming. Most hunters that I know can appreciate when there's a limited amount of hunting space and are happy to keep a reasonable distance from other hunters activities, even if as much out of a desire to get away from the crowds than from a desire to leave them some space. If anything, the visible presence of other hunters in a part of cottage country becoming increasingly inhabited by city dwellers helps to keep alive the image of hunting as a regular activity there. I've also seen my fair share of people spooking fish, scaring away waterfowl with their nutty skybusting or acting in ways that did not enhance my sense of feeling safe near their presence, but those exceptions aside I would have expected a stronger sense of common cause and fellowship from other hunters.

Rant mode off!

Frank

the simplest way to deal with people like that is just relpy...YOUR DEER? well dont you think you better feed them better in the winter so half of them dont starve to death! and walk away ;)

Where's Demonical when he's needed!:runaway:

He'll know the arse and give him a tap in the nards from all 20 000 (quick edit, all 28 000 of us) of us on nutz:50cal:

Mumptia I have bought a few items there, but I don't know the guys that run the store very well. Sorry that someone had a bad experience there.

It is bull#### if guys are ignorant and then laugh at you behind your back. If it were me I think I might take my business elsewhere.

Whitecourt is just like any other town, some good people and some ass-clowns.

Nope, wasn't me.

I tend to laugh at guys like that although they do make me mad.

We have a family like that south of my hometown. Couldn't figure out why they were so militant with their "No Hunting" signs until I found out that an outfitter pays them to keep people off.

MY DEER  that's a good one. Maybe I will head up Highway 43, hit one of his deer with my old Dodge then sue him for letting "his deer" roam free.:D

Like Larry the Cable Guy says; "Sometimes ya gotta wreck the truck so you can collect the insurance so you can make the truck payment.."

This year again, I spent a week in Whitecourt out hunting for deer.
Definately an interesting week.

Came back to camp from a morning of hunting to eat a little lunch. Friends wife comes out of the bush nearby after taking a whiz and tells us she saw a bear. Thinking nothing of it, we grabbed our guns and went to take a peek. Figuring it was a blackie, we werent too worried. Big shock...turns out to be a 450-500lb Griz. YIKES!!

Long story short, fish cops were called, they came to "investigate" and after lookin at the pics I took, the determined it was the same bear they saw earlier in the morning at a oil rig drill site 4km away. We packed up camp and moved to a new area.

Fish cops asked what we were out hunting for so we told them whitetail deer. They said the winter was hard on the animals and the whitetail numbers were down 75%.

We had nothing but good experiences in Whitecourt this year. Any rigs guys who drove past our camp stopped to warn us about the bear. Got a bit of info from the fish cops but basically no real info pointing us to the "big ones".

In the 5 or 6 days of hunting we only saw a handful of deer. Most of which were small. The first and only buch we saw ended up on the wrong end of my 30-06. It wasnt huge but at least we went home with a small 3x3 whitetail and some good stories.

Like others have said, there are always some ass-clowns who ruin it for everyone. No complaints about the Whitecourt locals from me or my hunting partners.

As a side note for those of you who remember the firearm transportation crackdown in Whitecourt earlier in the hunting season. I asked the fish cop about what he thought about safe firearm transportation. He just smiled and said "that was the cops, not us, lets leave it at that".

Fox Vegas, you says?.....explains a few things:p

Anyway, sorry to anyone with friends behind the counter at the gun shop in WC, but the two I talked to in there 4 years back were assh@tss, first class. The d1psh1t that mounted my friends scope, put the thing on sideways (windage on the top), and forgot to tighten the screws on the front base (the base was already on tight[we were replacing a smashed scope rip leupold 4x], and didn't need to be taken off but braindead wanted to make sure it didn't need loctite(?)) When I asked to talk to the owner or manager (after the wasted trip to the gravel pit), it turned out that he thought we were bald faced liars and told me so. Oh, and when I asked for 7mm Rem Mag ammo, the first goon handed me 7mm Mauser. But that's ok, we shouldn't have been hunting their moose anyway.

Yep.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't WC a transient town?

Towns with a small "born here" populations can be bad for being friendly.

Too much of "not my town, so who cares" in the air.
