I've had my sights set on getting a Savage Model 12FV in 22-250 for a while now. So, now that the time has come to buy one none of the dozen or so stores I've called or visited have one in stock or can get one until Savage gets their export permits sorted out.... :( I did find one in .204 Ruger, but I have a lot of 22-250 brass as well as factory cartridges still lined up in their boxes....

So now what do I do? I can't wait until the spring to buy a new firearm!

So I need advice!

Here is my short list so far:

Marlin .444 But do you get the longer barreled XLR or just the classic blued walnut short barrel? Or do you just say the heck with it and get a 45/70GG like everyone else? But then if you want a GG why not get a 450 instead?

Ruger 375 Alaskan. $1100 price tag seems steep for what you get and the wait time to get one I've been advised is 5 - 6 weeks...

Then of course I'd like to get a new short barreled shotgun. Can't seem to find a Mossberg 500 Mariner with a 14" barrel anywheres. Saw one before Christmas and should have bought it I guess, but now it has been sold. The Dominion Grizzly 870 clone looks nice with that 12.5" barrel, at least in the pictures, but without seeing I don't know what the quality of the bluing is

Or of course I could just settle for the little girl with pink ribbons in her hair .204.... Just not sure I'll be happy with that when I want to shoot a milk jug at 500 yards.

What to do what to do?

Nothing, you wait.......

I have never said I'll never be able to get a gun, you just have to be patient till one shows up which usually takes about 24 hours to 3 weeks but if you keep your eye out here it will eventually pop up, all that matters is how hard you are to get the gun you really want.

Buy one in 308 bolt face.
prosper has a 12v 22-250 barrel, good price. I would double check to see if he still has it though.
Ishootguns has a headspace guage.
Buy a SharpShooterSupply barrel nut wrench

or sell the factory barrel and have a smith swap the barrels

True I could just buy any short action savage with a .308 bolt face and put a new barrel on it. Might even be cheaper if you can find a barrel for a decent price. The only real problem is finding a gunsmith in southern Alberta who isn't busy for the next 3 years....

Yup, great advice. Never be in a rush and don't settle for something else....otherwise you will just be posting it on the EE.

Have you checked the major mail order places? Wholesale lists a lot of 22-250 and then there is P and D Ent and SIR etc. I have had a lot of success even with left hand rifles through these guys so righties should be butt plug easy. Then there are the exchanges with lots of 22-250 on them. Suggest also if you are not looking for a new rifle neccessarily then post a "wanted.." ad in the exchange. Had lotsa luck there too. Good luck and happy hunting.

Well I got lucky! Well.... not quite lucky that way... (you dirty minded nutz!)

Thought I had looked or called everyone in the province. Then started checking with shops in BC, then Ontario and a couple in Manitoba. While I was looking through the ads in the hunting regulations I realized I had over looked Russels Sporting Goods somehow

They had two in stock lol
Picked it up today and couldn't be happier! Now to figure what I'm going to do about replacing the nasty stock that it comes with. :D

Wonderful you found what you wanted. Between Russells and WS and P n D or SIR I can usually find what I want. Found that out after looking for my leftie Ruger ss mkII 30-06. Called all the way out to New Brunswick and to Victoria the other way.Wholesale had it but Russells has pulled it out of the fire a couple of times too. Good news. Happy shooting.

Is it the new center feed? If the mag box stays on the rifle its an old style and lots of stocks are available. If the mag stays in the stock you have a new center feed.

Cheers,
Rob

Wait and get what you want, it will be cheaper in the long run.

Buy what's availible right now, you don't like it, you sell it at a loss, then still have to wait for what you want.

It's the old style. Didn't realize Savage had made a change yet. I'm going to try making a stock myself first. I've got an idea about what I want to try, but only trial will tell me if it's what I want.

Basically I've got a dozen 1 1/2" X 1 1/2" X 72" pieces of reclaimed oak that have been in my wood rack drying for 5 years now. I'm thinking that I'll use them to make a rough finish stock that I can cover with a bed coat. Should be solid enough as it is a very tight grained oak and the pores should cover up nicely with the bed coat. If that goes well I'm going to get a nice piece of ash that I can stain a dark gray shade and make another.
