Happy on the farm, plan on leaving feet first.
I know guns are very subjective, and in full disclosure I'm not really a pistol guy. I have a couple wheel guns and some historical pistols I shoot once/yr, clean, put away.

Son has bought himself a pistol (baretta 9 mil), so tomorrow I'm ordering a dueling tree for his bday present........so I'm shopping for a 45. (Good friend has an old nickel plated colt, used to shoot a Lot with him, that 45 shoot once, set your hat over it, the rest land in the hat. (no kidding)).

Don't expect that, figure he got lucky. Want a pistol to shoot for fun with son on the dueling tree. Yes, I could buy a 9 mil, but I'm 63 this year and have fond memories of friends 45 colt.

I'm happy with laying out a tarp to catch the brass. Doubt I'll shoot more than a thousand rounds/yr with it, am happy to reload.

Don't really have a budget in mind, but while I'm not cheap(cheap is buying the least expensive irregardless of quality) I'm realistically frugal, as I really won't shoot it that much and, well, I'm 63 this year.

Would prefer if made here, or in N AM, you get the drift. Just to reiterate, I really know little about pistols.

Sometimes you can purchase a 45 Colt 1911A1 style pistol that has been "refined" for a reasonable price
People have used the old Norinco 1911A1 imports and turned them into very good shooters
 
I'm not a wheel gun guy per se but I really enjoy shooting my S&W 625.

For autoloaders, I'd recommend a Dan Wesson 1911, Sig 220 sao and Glock 21 SF
 
You want a 1911...
Norks are ok for the price, little loose and rough around the edges, but they work well, but our of stock everywhere I looked, they are about $450.
Girsan, made in Turkey are decent, but a couple hundred bucks more.

If you can wait a month or 2, IRG has a wide selection of 1911's in the US you can buy. Rock Island have a good reputation.

If you're more into wheel guns and history, then a 1911 it is, not one of the recent plastic guns. And it is "the" gun for sending .45 ACP downrange.

For made-in-Canada, Dlask has done .45 ACP 1911s in the past but they look cleaned out at the moment. Very good, but not inexpensive.

There are several made-in-USA options. Colt is the original (but avoid Series 80), Dan Wesson makes fine guns, Springfield makes a decent 1911, and there are many more.

The Remington R 1 advanced and Springfield Armories, are nice to.
But series 80, if that matters to you.

Here’s a picture of mine, I bought it for my son to use , so he wanted the nickel model with faux pearl grips .. lol ganster.

I thought those were rebranded Shooter's Arms from the Philippines (another solid choice, and only a bit more than a Norinco but a lot better quality).

I didn’t know that, it’s hard to tell the difference, for me anyway.
Do SA make a series 70 branded with their stamp ?

Have a look at Smith and Wesson 1911 in 45acp.
External extractor, the fire pin safety is done in a way that it will not effect the trigger pull, made in USA.
There is a few factory custom around, normal stock one are good. 1200 to 1600 is a price range.
There is a engraved one on the EE to eyeball.
Shoot well enough for government work.

Thanks, I’ve seen the SAM listed on wolverines site but didn’t realize it was a 70 series.
The stock trigger in my RIA was atrocious and the sights weren’t much better.
I sent it to Dark international and got that straightened out.
It’s a solid piece now

I chose this particular 1911 for the nickel plating? There weren’t many other options at the time

S&W 1917, 1937, 1950, 1955, 25, 625, colt 1917 and New Service variants on the revolver side. Numerous 1911 makers. I prefer Colts, but there are some other really nice ones out there. Oddly enough I have used a slightly tuned Norinco that has one of the nicest triggers I've tried on 1911's (and I own quite a few of them). - dan

For 45ACP, not many options right at a 5" barrel other than 1911 - Just the Springfield XD 5" as far as I know. You'll come pretty close with Glock 21/41, Sig 220, and S&W M&P45.

IF you're interested in comparing different makes and models, I strongly recommend going to a club shoot or a commercial range where you can try many different types side by side. The difference in "feel" of different pistols is huge. If you don't feel like spending the time comparing different models in hand:


Nothing else in the world feels like a 1911 in 45ACP.

RIA are made by armscorp in the Philippines, SAM is a different company.
Armscorp is the largest 1911 maker there.

Armcorp yes. I do believe Taylor's and Company in the US have a business partnership together. Apparently it's pretty good quality 1911 for less than new Colt prices.
Might be worthwhile at least window shopping American website?
