so i been scanning some forums via google in search of some varget 180gr data and common trend is that 2208/Varget IS NOT the good stuff for this combo??

i posted a few days ago about new to me Primers to load 180gr BTSP hornadys an use Varget.........

for some reason i thought this wasa good powder for the 06, perhaps i have wires crossed with the 308 over all?

ive got no real choice at the moment an perhaps the slightly shorter 20 inch barrel might make good of the Varget?

what do ya say here?

i have precisely 31 woodleighs to load, around 25 loaded for this next few weeks and then i am turning to the Hornady 180 combo.

Varget i use in 308 Win, for the 06 my go to powder is IMR 4350.

PS
Hodgdon website lists Varget with 180gr bullet, start 44.0gr= 2,533fps max 47.0gr= 2,668fps

Varget will be.similar to factory ammo performance with that combo. It won't make quite as high velocity as a bit slower powders could, but is still very suitable. I use 4064 in 3006 with 180gr bullets which is about the same burn rate as varget. Shoots well and maybe lose 50-100 fps compared to the 4350 powders loaded to the nuts.

Go for it and don't look back.

What powders can you get? IMR 4350 and H4350 are great, CCI Primers with these 2 powders. Ramshot Hunter is excellent, Fed 215 Primers with this one. Velocity with Hunter is around 2800 fps from a 22 in barrel.
Accuracy with IMR4064 will be very good but velocity will be less (2550-2600 fps, depending on barrel length),

As Jethunter says, Varget will work fine

That 20 inch barrel will be your limiting factor IMHO and slower powders such as 4350 will not give you the velocities you're looking for.

20" barrels suck; no two ways about that. Why give up free horsepower? However, the about 100 fps of lost velocity to a 24" is about the same as getting 50 yards closer. Not really the sort of thing a guy with 31 Woodleighs to shoot up is going to notice, although I really do like those bullets at moderate ranges, which I'll peg at anything this side of 400 yards just as a point of reference.

The powders that give the highest velocities in long barrels will also give the highest velocities in shorter barrels, faster burning powders may have some advantages in reduced muzzle-blast in short barrels but that's about it.

Copy on this JetHunter! all of which doesnt phase me much at all.

-- "... slower powders such as 4350 will not give you the velocities you're looking for..." - im not really chasing any velocities with this one, an accurate repeatable load that isnt super slow-- example though if my 'accurate' load ends up at *min charge in the book at 44 @ 2500, with my lesser barrel length ,im not ideally cool with 2400-2450..... I have typically found good hunting loads in the higher end of the load data with everything else >180 gr..

--"What powders can you get? IMR 4350 and H4350 are great,"" i believe this powder is our AR2209 ! i dont have, an its a common, often hard to find powder. (i will look at this down the track?)
i have not enough of 2213sc and 2217 (which was for 7 mag/sold) -- may be able to trade for 2209 -hmm.
the 2217 may work for super heavy stuff which i wont be using unless Buffalo is on menu again, aka 220-240gr projectiles. but not an option for the 180s.

i hav heard this before--- which is interesting. however you are spot on imo regarding woodleighs an 400m

ha ha- No, They simply do not.

They Rock

I don't know about that; I've got a M 700 stainless synthetic in 30-06, cut to 20" and fitted with 10 shot detachable mags. My son used that one when we were shooting the crap out of your Northern Territory; occasionally getting it so hot that you could smell the stock melting. For that sort of thing the short barrel wasn't much of a handicap, but 200 yards was sort of a long shot in that area. Never could figure out any advantage to the short barrel; but that short barrel struggled for 2700 fps with 165s with the same loads that clocked 3000 fps in my 24" Cooper. As suckage goes, that has enough vacuum that it should have had a hose and power cord. ;) Heck; it's the difference between a 30-06 and a 300 Win, for the price of saving a few ounces of steel.

ha ha ha- now that you put it like that with your numbers, it looks just like a more powder burning 308........ which , heck, is no good!
well ####, what do i do now?? have the Thread machined off, an chamber shortened to rechamber to .308 X6.5creed???? or weld on an extra 4 inches and run the drill thru it from the muzzle to make sure its sound in dimensions???

i knew i should of kept that .270!!!

Some years ago I had read about what the writer called a "picket fence" of modern and not so modern cartridges - is so much overlap, hard to get one clear winner that a step down or up can not cover. From your comments, consider 308 Win - 30-06 - 308 Norma Mag - 300 Win Mag - 300 Weatherby Mag. Likely can make more difference among them with inch or two of barrel, rather than re-chambering. Most would agree is a difference between the two on farthest ends - say with 165 grain bullets - but hard to put finger on the one that is clearly different than the one below or above. And there are multiple others that could be slid in among the five that I listed - I am sure each cartridge has had writings and proponents about how much better they are than the others. Pretty much no difference among any to kill something out to 300 yards, though. I took my first elk with 165 grain 308 Win; took my last one with 225 grain 338 Win Mag - first one was a much longer shot than any others afterwards - needed more tracking and a finishing shot - but that was on me, not the loading that got fired.

Just send it to me already, I'll pay postage

ha ha thats almost a good deal!
But to be fair, the shorter barreled .30-06 is the ducks nuts for what i intend to use it for.
it wears the 2-7 vari x an that itself makes 300m a long way and critters smallish in it pending their surroundings, the fair call is 200m gun with all things considered in heavier rounds.

the 2208 will have to work, an the velocity it gets it what its got with the 180s- the base is covered for a flatter shooting round with the supply of 130gr PPSN which would be used on lighter deer like Fallow around Easter , with winter it turns to the heavy deer and heavy rounds.

im not one for recoil, so any advantage a quicker 2208 gives me in less felt recoil is a bonus :D with the compromise being velocity

i made a monumental potentially stoopid mistake loading 20 rounds for this month when i altered the wrong scale slider, producing 40.9GR instead of 49.0GR........

so i have 150 PPSNs with the No.34 CCIs loaded @ 49gr X10 an hoping they do the job at hand- which they aught to do a better job than the 40.9gr loads would have im sure.......doh.

Sounds like you loaded down to 30-30Win velocities, which have taken all sorts of game animals, from Rabbits to Grizzly Bears, with 150-175 grain bullets at moderate velocities.

haha yeh possibly along those lines, moreso the X hair wont be anywher near the Bullet when it comes time to do business, had i of not known!
its a pita to sight those old vari-xs too..... so no thanks LOL

So, your post got me curious and I loaded up 20 180 grain #3072 BTSP that I have on the shelf.

I used a magneto speed to show me appx velocities.

The rifle is an Antonio Zoli bolt action, an Italian copy of the Husqy 1900 but much smoother cycling and IMHO more accurate. It shoots all bullet weights from 100grain to 220 grain well, if I do my part.

I started with 45 grains of Varget over CCI250 primers. This load was mild, no slouch. 2560 fps over 3 rounds from a 24 inch bbl, so appx 2450 fps in a 20 inch bbl

46.0 grains Varget - same primers. This load was similar to the previous at 2525 fps average, 3 rounds

47.0 grains Varget - same primers. This load was stouter and velocities went to 2610 fps/ 3 rounds

48.0 grains Varget - same primers. More noticeable recoil, velocities were 2655 fps/ 3 rounds.

The last loads were at 49.0 grains Varget. Recoil was similar and velocities wer at 2690fps/ 8 rounds.

The last load was the most accurate in my rifle. The only loads that showed primers starting to flatten were those 47.0+

Your rifle should be able to handle the 49.0 grain load of Varget over CCI250 primers.

My OAL was as long as the magazine well, minus appx .050.

My rifle has a ''deep'' throat, that's quite tight, so around .100 in off the leade, but still in the case neck when entering.

IMHO, Varget is a bit fast for the 180 grain btsp.

Still, at 49.0 grains and 2690 fps average over eight shots with a total 20+fps spread it's a very consistent performer that gives very good accuracy.

Temps today were right around 12C and humidity was high. Elevation is right around 600 meters.

Time 2pm 3/30/2022

You should easily be able to safely exceed 2500fps with your 20 inch bbl.

i replied in the other thread but Thanking you again mate

had good to great-for-me accuracy with 45gr an CCIs, so i loaded 45.5gr for now as it hits "bang on" crosshair at 100meters.
certainly a load i can use side by side to the 150gr POI at 100, which is about +2.

theres considerable energy in this load, as the gong absolutley rocked an the sound very defining. a little notice in time to target but not enough to worry a soul.

will possibly slowly up the charge over time, as it looks like Hornady projectiles are readily available, somewhat
