Am I the ONLY Ontario dude still hunting?

back to JYC...........

I see that cosmic was hunting with the Lindsay cognoscenti. So that was you and what other lad? :p

Doug

Well - I made my debut coyote hunting on the 31'st. I had the good fortune of being invited down to the Lindsay area to hunt with some of the local cognoscenti.
Here's a twist - they use hounds specifically bred to track coyotes and wolf. I must say, those coyotes are fast and cagey! We had quite a day, saw five in total, managed to bag one.
Interesting pastime - think I'll try it up north. Will have to modify the regimen as pushing hounds through deep snow and tight bush would be difficult.

There is a guy just outside of Lindsay that breeds (not personally i dont think:) ) the hunting hounds. Its amazing what he does with those dogs. There are tons of coyotes around the area though. Too many turkeys though, I invite anyone that wants there 2 turkeys this year to PM me man.
They have a grouse game farm is anyone is that bored and wants to waste 250 on a day of grouse.

LPD - I had the opportunity to hunt with the chap you mention - he takes his hound (walkers) breeding seriously. I've been talking to some of the local lads here in Bancroft, we've decided to try to get rid of a few coyotes on our deer hunting land. Last fall they were coming in and tormenting our hounds at night.
Doug - I now realize that there are a number of cognoscenti at large in the Lindsay area!

back to cosmic.............

........there are a lot of things at large in the Lindsay area! :runaway: Including cognoscenti, but I think those are rare and endangered.....:p

Good for you for taking a poke at the coyotes. We are surely over-run with the blasted things! :50cal:

Doug

Cosmic- I took out a bunch of coyotes from the Baptiste Lake area as well as up by the pancake place. You guys sure have a coyote issue. I actually got tired of skinning them and stopped. Bears are starting to come out as well in that area as well.

LPD - I'm very familiar with the infestations, both bear and coyote. Had a large blackie trying to get into my storage shed all summer, he's not bothering us any more...
I presume you trapped out the coyotes? Are you limited by tags, such as for rifle hunters in zone 57?

Well a bit of both. I trapped some and shot some. No I didnt have any limits. The property I was on was owned by a guy who "claimed" they were nuisance pests and I was contracted to remove the issue. I had to transfer my trappers license to his property before I could do it though. A few guys up in that area have trap lines I had to make sure I didnt cross though or atleast ask permission a few times when I was hunting them.

Do you bear hunt? A buddy of mine has 309 acres up in Quadeville thats covered in bears. He runs a youth-at-risk camp out of there and wants them thinned a bit

Yes - We carry bear tags and hunt at our deer camp near Highland Grove. Some of my deer camp buddies take it more seriously than me - its a bit of a job to bait, set up tree stands, etc. However, many folk swear that bear meat is more palatable than venison.

I know Highland Grove quite well. I helped build a few hunting roads on a guys property between Highland Grove and Harcourt. Very nice deer hunting.

I have some pretty amazing meals from a bear. I find its more of a treat. Its not something I could eat a lot of. Venison on the other hand I could eat a roast myself and I love venison sausages.

Bear makes FABULOUS jerky!

And bear mixed with venison makes delicious sausages!

And (now I am drooling....) there is probably no finer meat for a fondue than bear loin.

Gotta like that bear meat!

Doug

Well Doug - We're both old enough to remember when fondues were fashionable back in the 70's - I'm on a personal mission to bring bring them back into vogue. I'll have to try some bear loin next time - wonder if I should tell the guests? Perhaps after, always interesting to see the reaction...
Highland Grove, Harcourt, ... is hunt camp world - we put on some marathon hunts with 20 guys, lots of hounds - its like a military operation. Lots of fun. Next year we're bringing in a massage therapist.
JYC - FWIW - With the closure of the Algonquin cookhouse things are a bit sparse up here. Latest word is that some Brits have taken over Martinwood GC, and are enticing people with nice cuisine. Might be worth a trip next time you're up in that neck of the woods.

Fondues went out of fashion??????

When did that happen????? :runaway:

I did a fondue for about six or eight of us (don't recall) two falls ago with black bear loin, mule deer rump roast and moose steak from an undetermined area of the moose's anatomy, (I am saying round but could be corrected by Dizzy Dan). Three kinds of wild game meat, all very lean, and we did it "Chinese" style with a broth instead of hot oil. It was absoluetly fabulous, and we had a modest amount left over that I made into a soup with the broth that had cooked off all the fondue meat.

MAN, that was good! :D

It would be worth bear hunting just to do that fondue again!

Doug

I'd like to try the broth style - years ago I sampled a broth fondue in a korean restaurant. Quite nice, the broth had a unique flavor - star anise perhaps - it really flavored the meat, which was sliced very thin.
At the end, they dropped an egg into it, beat it slightly, and served it as soup.
We try to eat well at our camp (No 5 day old chili breakfasts for us) - I think I'll drag out the fondue pot next year, and give the guy with the 20 gallon turkey deep fryer a break, before he sets the camp on fire.
