I've been reading and looking at the forun for a while now. I thought I'd take a second to introduce myself and show you what I have.

It is checkered.

If you are not familiar with the sportsman gun, it was made in the mid eighties for only a few years as a cost competitive option (vs the wingmaster) before the express days. I've handled a number of 870 express guns and the sportsman is much closer to a wingmaster than an express.

I think that they overlaped for a few years? I only recall seeing them at Target or similar stores in the US and they were still around in the very early 90s. By then I had and got rid of my first express. The Sportman was probably discontined because it was cutting into the sales of the cheaper to make express. Nice gun! How does it shoot?

Hi, welcome to the forum. You'll get a lot of helpful feedback; I know I have.

Here's my offering. A Maverick 88 12 gauge in 2 3/4- 3" cylinder bore. I got rid of that stupid pistol grip and put the original stock back on with a Limbsaver recoil pad. I've also got an ATI heat shield on it now. Great, cheap little shotgun. Love it!
