Kimber Query

Jus like me you're all over...........
:D
Why does that sound like a little to low a price? :nono:

Bob

Hi

You do realize that the rest of this thread is now toast. The only rational approach is for the assembled multitude (those guys with the tar and the feathers over there) to haul us both off to the looney bin.

Hi

If there's a problem with Kimbers over Colts it's not from the MIM stuff. I agree that I'd take a Colt 1911 over a Kimber any day, but it's more related to how each set up the weapon and support you if there is a problem.

Modern Colts seem to work just fine out of the box, modern Kimbers not so much so. Colt fixes problems with a minimum amount of fuss, Kimber can be (but is not always) very fussy.

Kimber on average sets up a pistol very tight, this creates problems some of the time. Colt sets up a pistol a bit more loose, and they work. Colts are fairly middle of the road for looks. Kimbers have the visuals. I'll take reliability ...

Bob

Hey Bob,
Sounds like maybe you didn't get good service from Kimber at one time, I'm not sure. I can only say that I've heard most of the discussion about new Colts being loose and ready to go VS Kimber being tight and troublesome out of the box and although I'm not an expert I think that's a bit of a generalisation and not completely accurate.

All modern pistols in that league are built pretty well and outside of an external extractor issue that Kimber had a number of years ago I don't think you would see more problems with one over another per 1000 guns.

One of the problems we face in Canada is a lack of ability to buy new Colt pistols. For the most part dealers here don't stock them. Shocking? Yes and I'm sure my fellow CGNers can give more reasons for that than I can. Luckily, in 1911's we do get a fair supply of Kimbers, STI's, Para's and a few others. My dream pistol is a Colt SCG in .45 and I will likely have Questar help me with importing that from your side when money permits. I'm perfectly happy with my Kimber TCII and after several thousand rounds have no failures of any type but there's just something about a Colt pistol. It's not about reliability etc I think it's the sense of history. (And yes it looks great too) :)

ps: since I started this rambling mess i guess it's ok to wander a bit here and there...:)

Hi

I guess since I was the rambling mess I should just plead guilty and head off to the stocks ... :D :D :D

Actually my personal experience with Kimber service was superb. I've talked to enough people since to realize that there's a very hit or miss nature to their setup.

Colts are relatively hard to find down here compared to Kimbers. The Kimber marketing approach is pretty high tech.

Mike,

Dealers in Canada don't stock Colts cause Colt ships only a few handguns across the border (I know that for a fact), they have a hard time supplying US demands....everything they make is sold, that is why they don't have to advertise.
If you really want a SCG, you shouldn't wait....that is a custom shop gun and no one knows when they could stop the production, and the prices will just keep climbing.
I bought in the states a Colt Gunsite and a SCG (among other Colts), imported by Questar and I don't regret any of them!:)

Hi

Except for the Defender, Colt's production is spoken for three to six months ahead of production. On specific pistols it's allocated even further back than that. There are a handful of distributors who take the bulk of what they make. Even the big shops down here are unable to fully stock the entire Colt line in the showcase. Most places have maybe two common models on display.

Thats what I'm doing. I'm going to import New Series 70 repro in blue through Questar.

Great! I don't have one but from what I heard from my US friends it's a nice, well made gun! The 1918-1911 repro is apparently a good buy too...they're only making 4000. Then they'll replace it with another 1911 with another finish...anyway I'm sure Bob will jump in...as soon he finishes with his feathers.

If you need help locating a gun in the US, Bob or I could help you...as we know a few dealers...;):D

Hi

The original WWI reproduction pistol is history as far as Colt is concerned. They are still out there in stores, so if you want one, get it now.

That pistol has been replaced by a new version with a different finish on it. It's "sort of" a reproduction of a 1918 "black army" finish. Unfortunately to be a correct mid 1918 pistol there are a couple of minor marking changes that would have to be made.

My WWI's are easily the nicest Colts I own.

I have owned both Colt's and Kimber's, I have had a Remington Rand 1911, 3 Colt Government's, 1 Gold Cup, 2 Detonics Scoremaster's, 4 1911 STI's and 2 Kimbers. I have a Kimber Tactical Custom II and a Kimber Super Match II, both purchased new and have never had any reliability issues so far, they shoot whatever I feed them, no feeding problems whatsoever, I've never had any problems with either one. When I had my Colt Gold Cup it was very fussy over what I could feed it, it worked great with 230 gr RN as most of them do, but 200 gr SWC were another story, switched to a Centaur Systems bull barrel with compensator and never ever had any issues with that gun.

Just my view of Kimber vs Colt. There will always be good and bad whatever you want to compare, but I would never take a box stock Colt over a Kimber.

Haven't had a Colt yet but my alloy framed Kimber Tactical Custom II has gone 3K rounds since I bought it from P&D last April with 0 failures or issues of any kind.

Nice gun BCMIKE, identical to mine, wouldn't part with it except for another exactly the same.

Nice one! I bought a dozen 8 rnd Kimber Pro-Tac mags with the teflon coated follower & interchangeable bumpers directly from Kimber and just put away the 7 rnd stock one as it is very gritty & not the best.

Hi

Well if we are putting up 1911 #### ....

I could go on ....

Every thread needs a few pics for those of us like myself who like some visuals along with those word things. I'd give my left you-know-what for that WWI Colt. I see the GCT is fresh from shooting...here is where I do my cleaning and puttering while posting.
