16 gauge what is old is new

I like 16g and its a shame that they aren't more common. My first gun was a 16g Beretta SxS and its the only one I have left in 16. While I’d like to think that at some point I’d buy others, I doubt they’ll become available in the models I’d want. One can hope though.

I too love the 16ga. I have a few doubles in 16 including a drilling over 7x65R. My 16ga model 12 is one of my most effective bird killers. I like 16ga so much, I bought a modern A5 sweet sixteen...

I only have one 16ga. A nice little AyA boxlock. I have a flat of #6 1oz loads which should last me awhile as i have taken quite a liking to the 20ga. As pinfire says a 16 can do as a 12 and a 20 can do as a 16. I felt a little untrusty when i first took a 20ga goose hunting but the first pair that came in folded as if hit with my double 10. Ive never doubted the lil 20 since and if i come across some bismuth 16ga my AyA will see waterfowl seasons as well.

Pre steel shot regulations I hunted everything with a 16 ga I would search gun shows and find all kinds ammo 1 1/4 oz no 2’s and 4’s kicked like a mile but would knock a Canada goose out of the air no problem. at that time mostly model 12’s .
I have two at this time a 26” bbl solid rib model 12 and a Parker vh I hunt with the Parker most of the time and the little model 12 is just cool . I stumbled upon 6 boxes of bismuth loads some years ago and do shoot a few ducks with the model 12 . RST out of the Parker for upland .

I see nobody has mentioned the Winchester model 1897 I have one in sixteen guage that was my grandpas , it works for me when I use it

straitshooter posted his 1897 early in the thread . I find that the hammer guns still in use is amazing . Interesting group responding to this thread keep them coming . On a side note strutts you are killing me with that solid rib sixteen.

Love the 16, I have three. Primary upland shotgun is a Citori Lightning. I also have both a Belgian and Japanese Auto 5 Sweet Sixteen.

Interesting... ...mine was originally my grandfather's, too. He bought it new in 1925*. My great grandfather was a hunter and a trapper. He is credited with being the first white man to build a permanent home in the Cold Lake/Bonnyville region (there were many other hunters, trappers and adventurers before him, but they were all transient). His eldest son and the second eldest (my grandfather) came out to Alberta when they were old enough and they stayed, too. (On a side note: My great grandmother never set foot in Alberta, yet had 14 kids with my great grandfather - fascinating stories abound from those days.)

My grandfather started out as a school teacher, then took up a career with the Hudson's Bay Co. as a manager, ultimately becoming Factor of the trading post in Hay River, NWT before returning to Alberta to open his own store in Bonnyville.

I see you're also in Alberta. Did your grandpa live in Alberta?

*Will have to show my respect with a 100-yr memorial hunt with his gun in 2025.

I’ve owned quite an array of 16s over a lot of years. As a waterfowler in Ab I now only use a 12. Cost availability and no longer reloading has removed the desired of a 16. I also no longer use a 10. The ho-hum do anything 12ga is now the only ga I shoot.

My grandfather would say anyone can own a 20ga and 12ga but it takes a true shotgunner to keep the 16ga fed and appreciate how special it is

Not my words but seems to say the same

Underappreciated, underestimated and misunderstood are apt verbs used to describe the 16-gauge shotgun. It’s unfortunate, as the midsize 16ga shotshell offers real advantages over other gauges when afield.

Fortunately, there’s a small cadre of dedicated shotgunners and handloaders who truly understand the 16-gauge’s forte and capabilities, and have been its advocate and protectorate through the years. Among them are aficionados espousing the shell’s virtues on websites and forum threads, such as the 16 Gauge Society. Their toil hasn’t been fruitless; there now appears to be a resurgence. This is most evident in the diversity of new 16-gauge shotguns and ammunition entering the marketplace recently, and the momentum doesn’t appear to be slackening.

Reddog, Some very nice 16's!!!! Nice photo of the pheasants too! And a very clean M12 for being 65 yrs old!

Looking at the stock to receiver fit of the M12, it appears you might have a 12 ga butt stock on it?? Wood appears a bit proud of the receiver at the stop and sides. The reason I even noticed it was I'd read they fit...but were a bit chubbier in the grip than the small action 16, 20 and 28 ga M12 stocks. Given that I put a 12 ga stock on my 1956 M12 16 ga a few hours ago...and it fits just as yours does. But mine is missing most of the blueing and has a Herter's "Polychoke" on it. Smooth action and nice old shotgun.

Some of my 16's. A German Emil Kerner, an Antonio Zoli sidelock circa 1963 and a Tula Arms sidelock circa 1930.
