Ok airgun nutz, educate me.

I think there are places where you could buy different springs to 'possibly' change the FPS.

Critters? Lets see....that gun with a 14 gr. pellet will put out around 8-9 ft. lbs of energy....stick with headshots on squirrels and grouse at 15 yards or less....apart from that, stick to paper and cans.

I shoot air rifle for a variety of 'purposes'. This is good advice.

HIGH power air rifles will do a little better, but not the run of the mill variety.

Head shots are key, and most good air rifles are up to the task out to 15+ yards or so.

I've seen profile, gut shots on squirrels from 10 feet with a good .177 air rifle (640 FPS) and they just ran away (to suffer). Not good.

I've seen the same rifle drop them flat (nary a twitch) with a head shot at over 10 yds. more than once.

This gun will fully penetrate (both sides) an empty pop can at over 25 yds.

Pop cans are for pussies... I usually tested the power of my airguns with tin (soup) cans. My .22 crossman survival one that you have to pump up a bunch could get thru one side of a soup can at 10 yards... took down a grouse no prob. I also once killed a pigeon with a .177 (Slavia 630, 495fps) at a range between 25-50 yards. Airguns can certainly do some damage.

I have a 177 caliber pellet gun that shoots around 1000 fps. I wouldnt use it on an animal bigger than a squirrel and no farther than 15 yards. Guns for killing use powder :)

Ok, I'll bite. What are the "varmint capabilities" of a .177 pellet airgun that shoots at around 450 FPS?

Truth be told, I haven't used mine much since I bought a whole bunch of .22 LR's (never can have too many!). Back in the (pre-PAL) day, though, it was all I ever used to punch paper.

Headshots. Close.

Take a bar of hand soap out and see what you get for penetration.

Good for around the house and yard, on gophers, good for pigeons in barns and sheds.

Get more energy downrange with a 22 cal at the same velocities, though.

Cheers

Half the fun of hunting grouse with a .177 springer as a kid was the fact that even a perfect head shot might only stun them, so you had to storm in and grab them by hand. :)

Hi

Shot placement is critical. If you are confident of a head shot things are different than if you are shooting for center of mass.

A .17 pellet is going pretty slow at 450 fps. Muzzle velocity on a good air gun shooting .17's is in the 900 to 1000 fps range.

I have a Condor that I can knock pigeons off of elevators with. It will shoot through a 2x4 no problem when it's cranked up.

I'd love to see an airgun forum on GunNutz. My boys both use Chinese sidecock .22's and they are SUPPOSED to be below the legal limit but I doubt it. Man! They hit hard! They both have firearms licenses now so we don't do as much airgun hunting as we did last year and earlier but we still have some target shooting competitions in the back yard. I shoot a Gamo magnum .177. It chrony's at almost 900fps with Crosman wadcutters and I took a rabbit at 40 yards with a headshot in my garden once. Shot a few gophers with it as well as porcupines. Airgun hunting is absolutely challenging and fun but good shot placement is definitely critical. My father and I both use our airguns as a "nuisance wildlife relocation tool" when neighbor disturbance becomes an issue. GRIN He uses a Diana hunter which is even faster than mine. WOW! I am sure there are lots of even more powerful ones floating around the country but these two are the hottest ones I have ever shot. I really enjoyed reading this thread guys!

I used to shoot airpistols (actually that's what I started shooting with) but after I got a few real once airguns became a little boring (esp. whn you shoot them in a poorly lit macemant) so I don't currently own any, but was thinking of getting the new Umarex Beretta Px4 copy....

I shoot a .25 cal Webley Patriot and I wish I could give you a report on how it handles gophers but I haven't been able to shoot any yet. It shoots a 19 grain pellet at 820 FPS and 24 grain Crow Magnum Hollow Points at about 700-720 fps. Can't wait to try them on game.
