What did the 300 Savage do?

There you go. I bought one just because it is "different". In this case old and not so common. That latter is probably why I have so many wildcats too

"different" - is how I ended up with some 7.65x53 - two Argentine 1909 rifles made in Germany, not Argentina - a rifle and a cavalry carbine - both from CGN. Then PPU brass from TradeEx. Dies, I think, from CGN - might have come along with one of the firearms. 174 grain bullets same as 303 British - Woodleigh and Hornady .312" on hand. Load data found in several earlier loading manuals. Have not seen a single other one in use, ever. I had made up a third - a Paraguay barrel screwed on to an 1895 Chilean small ring receiver - but that one has moved along down the road - I no longer have it. That one required my first and only attempt at making a "breeching washer", since the small ring Paraguay barrel tenon threads are longer than the small ring Chilean receiver wanted to accept.

I've always wanted a 99F in 300 Savage, and someday I'll find a good one!
Until then, my only 300 Savage is in a Remington Model 81
Have not hunted with it yet, it does have a bit more thump than a Rem 8 in 35 tho

so breifly lookin over numbers in this thread...... my 303 british Ruger 1 is right up there on levels with the 300 savage...... an my current 30-06 loads are proberly on par with 180gr 300 savage performance..... which is all round about a 308 win performance.

Thanks!

Yup, just pick whichever strike your fancy and run with it... Within most hunting situation, the game won't know the difference.
- On the bright side, it is often easier to find boxes of ammo (laying around) in odd calibers... than in the latest/greatest iteration

Is the 3/4 length mag tube lever a Marlin 1893? Why did these guns (and whatever that is if it’s not) have that triangular piece of metal protruding from the receiver?

One of my first centrefire rifles was a 336, guess I forgot, cheers. Looks a bit further forward for the funky look on the 1893

Watch that crack that is developing. On my 81 in .300 Savage it cracked through to the rear rendering the gun unsafe. I was able to get well used replacement parts but it took for ever. I don't think the 8 81 was stout enough for the .300 Savage.

I've never noticed that, only shot the rifle twice.
Best take a close look this weekend

I know they are a proven platform. But that short arse neck on them makes me react like I do to 7.65 Argy...'nose wrinkles like smelling dogsh*t on a shoe'...well, that sucks.
Granted it had to be to fit in the rifle magazine...but a 30-40 say...way nicer neck to a reloader.

I wouldn't buy a rifle chambered in .300 savage today, because the .308 fills the same role, just a tiny bit better IMHO. But it was a historic, innovative cartridge and deserves a lot of respect.

OTOH .... I wish my 700 308 was a 300 Savage for no other reason than it's an old classic.
